I saw his fight replayed last night against Luis Callazo. Man, what a dandy that was. Possibly one of the best welterweight fights I've seen in years. What do you guys think? How does he size up with everyone else in the division.
I wasnt that impressed to tell the truth. I had Collazo winning 115-112. Berto's speed is very impressive, but his shot selection needs improving (he seemed happy to land shots on Collazo's guard). I think his power may be overrated, his defense is leaky and his general ring intelligence is poor, but he does have guts. He needs a rematch with Collazo, a fight against Cintron, then mosley. Assuming he wins these fights, id say he would be good enough to take on Cotto. (I think he will always be too small for Margarito who will probably move up to light middle within the next 2 years)
Room for improvement but..i wonder if he's too small? I mean, the guy has a middleweight frame but..he looked like a midget figthing Collazo...What do you think?
I like him, speed, good power, heart. He doesn't seem like he comes in with a plan though, a bit wild but even though he has a title don't forget he is still learning. We'll see how he progresses this year.
I really like Berto but in his fight against Collazo.....:yikes. He dont seem to know what to do vs a good southpaw. He has speed and power but he has no fighting skill at close quarter and he throw a lot of punch for nothing. I was really pissed of with the decision. But he is young and he will get better overtime. If he ever learn how to fight on the inside he will be a very dangerous opponent even for someone like Cotto.
Berto was easy to hit on the inside. I shuddered to think what would have happened if he was in with Cotto or Margarito. But no one knows this better than Berto's team and I'm sure they'll work on the flaw. Andre has a ton of natural talent, and he's in boxings deepest division.
he needs a proper trainer, his corner is no good at all, specially at this level of the game.....he has alot of potential, and he has what champs are made of, which is the heart to dig in deep and put it all on the line when you're down on the cards, but his fight with Collazo proved alot, he looked exactly like what he is, a raw 4year pro getting by on his potential he's still green, but if he wants to improve he can, but most importantly he needs a new trainer...i think he can be something one day, but at this point Cotto, Margarito, and Williams would all eat him up
He has all the tools, now he just needs to work on defense. If he continues to take the shots he took from Callazo from other top fighters in the division he may just get KO'd. He also needs to work on the jab a little bit, I think he can be more affective with it and set up more shots without taking as much chances.
Berto is the ****. I still think hes gonna be reconzied champ after he beats Mosley in the spring for unfied champ.
