I just wanted to make the case for Calzaghe to have one last fight in 2009. If he does so then he can accomplish his dream of being a multi-weight world champion. As things stand he is just a SMW champion as his win over BHOP only afforded him the Ring Magazine Title. You can bang on all you want about the The Ring being highly respected but at the end of the day it is just a magazine and not a proper sactioning body. That rules out a fight with Froch and BHOP but would make Dawson and Erdei the only real options to allow JC to fulfill his boxing ambitions.
Although pedantically you are correct, the diversity of the belts is ridiculous and the Ring is largely respected for it's correct nomination of the premiere in any given division. Also, Calzaghe IS still the #1 Light Heavyweight, regardless of sanctioning authority.
**** the sanctioning bodies, the only other claim I think is at all reasonable against Calzaghes is Erdei as the "man who beat the man".
You can bang on all you want about the sanctioning bodies being the boys that hand out the increasingly meaningless shiny belts, but at the end of day they are not the highly respected Ring magazine. Its the fighters that make the fights, not the crappy belts; the ring's policy works the best.
The Ring has made a few questionable calls lately though...... Just a quick question..... Each time the holder has a fight, is the title on the line? Sticking to the Calzaghe theme, why would Jones be accepted as a challenger?
Its not perfect, but it works a lot better than the alphabet soup mandatories. Obviously it gives the fighter more freedom than the organisations do, and there is no sanctioning fee. Its not the Ring's fault if Calzaghe defends their "title" against Jones; they have no control over the boxer's decision...as I said its not a perfect system.
Sanctioning bodies are necessary for rules, regulations, refereeing, judging oversight and ranking of fighters etc. This is all well beyond the scope of a magazine and it is not plausible for The Ring to take one aspect of a sanctioning bodies mandate (ranking) and still be considered equivalent in authority. I agree that the Ring is less corrupt and has the most accurate and fair rankings but what is to stop other magazines having their own title.
I agree with and share your frustration with the number of insignificant belts available out there but if all the boxing magazines jump on the bandwagon things will be worse.
For now the Ring has the monopoly, and I haven't heard any rumours of other magazines trying to implement their own belt policy. As a boxing fan I look at a guy who has a Ring belt and know that this boxer is one of the top, if not thee top, guy in the division; when I see an average boxer with a WBO title belt he is defending against an out-of-his-depth mandatory, a belt he won in a vacant title fight because the WBO stripped the previous holder for not defending against one of their highly ranked muppets, it pisses me off. I feel the sanctioing bodies are a lot more open to criticism than the Ring magazine; I have no problem recognising Calzaghe as a two weight world champion.
You may have an opinion on the sanctioning bodies which I agree with but history will record that JC was a 1 weight world champ. He should therefore fight one last time at LHW.
Waffle waffle waffle bull**** Unnecessary hating. Look at the guys who own the belt, corrupt ****s. Beltsmean nothing, history is everything
I might just be a cynical old ******* but I'm very suspious of A magazine ranking boxers when magazine is owned buy someone who has a vested interest as a promoter & still active boxer, I agree boxers make fights not belts not the other way round
I am not hating on JC I just want him to fight one more time preferably in Cardiff for his fans and ideally for a LHW or CW world title.
