Im not the biggest Holmes fan but he was better than Lewis....Do i think he would have beat Lewis probably not but in his era he fought better opposition and was more dominant during his reign.

Very good post. I always thought Lennox had the better resume...sometimes I get the feeling that rose tinted specs play too much of a part in peoples opinions.

Holmes early opposition was very weak until Norton and his opponents were hand picked...He got a suprise from 18-9 trial horse Mike Weaver ( and that fight gave Weaver renewed confidence) but would not give Weaver a rematch. He also got dropped badly by a guy who never had success as a puncher Renaldo Snipes(Snipes got the fight by surviving 2 KD's vs Coetzee and getting the KING String decision) Holmes was part of the payoff to raise him and his opponents by RING magazines John Ort. Holmes best 2 wins were over Earnie ( always Lost the big fight ) Shavers and Gerry( REHAB) COoney) the rest of his opponents were a poor LOT. Lewis may have not fought Bowe and decided not to fight Byrd (no Money) at 38 but Holmes (FOR WHAT EVER REASON) did not fight Thomas,Tate,Page,Dokes,Coetzee, and did not rematch Weaver,Williams,Witherspoon,Norton after controversial decisions or fights that were deserving rematches. Holmes was a great fighter but he was not tested vs the best of his era and the outcome may have been different if he had. I could Imagine Joe Louis even at his older age had not rematched Walcott or Marciano not rematched Charles or Tunney Dempsey. Holmes was a very good fighter but points must be taken away because of these facts....Lewis rematched MCall and Rahman but he also fought Holyfield,Tyson and beat the man that really beat Bowe, Golota

It isn't like Larry wasn't fighting big punchers either though. Shavers, Cooney, Williams (Roy), Norton, Mercer, McCall, Witherspoon, Weaver, Smith, etc. They both fought very big punchers.

This thread has confirmed to me what I already knew anyway... Lewis is massively overrated.

Im not saying he wasnt a great fighter, but better than Holmes ?
    Get the **** outa here.

Its clear as day when you watch both men in the ring that Holmes was the more polished & better boxer with more attributes & he had way more defences & never lost til the end of his career.

I wont pretend Im suprised with all the support for Lewis (we are in ESB land after all) but Id bet that as much as 10 people that voted for Lewis have seen hardly any Holmes fights if any.

Oh Billy boy! Have you ever thought it might be about quality of opposition? Lewis would have looked DYNAMITE vs the likes of Norton, Snipes, Cooney and indeed Witherspoon and Spinks! He avoided nobody whilst Holmes blatantly did. Even past peak Tyson and Holy would have been more dangerous than possibly ALL of Holmes challengers.

We can pick holes in the career of Ray Robinson if we try, no fighter did everything we wanted them to do & no fighter is perfect.

I could say... of all Lewis top rated opponents, only Vitali was prime & Lennox got busted up, was lucky to win & retired rather than give a thoroughly deserved rematch.

Holmes was a better champion & better fighter than Lewis, fair enough if you want to kick about with your head in the sand but to me its obvious who was better.

I'm pretty certain you weren't around real time for Holmes. No? :hey

Lewis took on all comers where as Holmes avoided many of them. There'in lay the microscopic difference for me.

    Lewis was the peoples champion!

As for picking holes in SRR, well, Holmes is infinitely more open.

Hahaha, me too of course, on about 12 Radler's to boot at the time:D

It's funny mate, so many look from the outside in at Australia per the snakes and crocs and sharks and spiders but it's all really not that bad at all. Crocs and sharks are only a worry if you're in their territory, and i cannot remember the last attack close around here. I will say tho it's just a matter of time in our local river. There are now crocs there, at least one man eating size and peeps continue to fukk around in the shallows cast netting and the like. In area's the damn thing has been filmed! Many kids too unfortunately. It WILL happen, eventually. One went at a horse a few years ago as the trainer cooled it down.

A few years back a redback appeared on the mates back near his collar. He was leaning against a building. I immediately grabbed a stick and told him not to move, there was a redback on his back

So what's he do? Starts pulling his shirt around and shaking it and frigging around. Good way to get bitten :hey

Anyone i got stern, he stood still and i simply brushed it off. The best thing is to KNOW you've been bitten. Many peeps get bitten and don't know, even by snakes. Mowing the yard is a good time. A mates brother was bittne that way and didn't know, simply dropped cold still mowing. They barely saved him.

I'll post a pic or two later of the local croc farm ;)
