I agree. I wasn't asking about that. I was asking why you think it's unreasonable to rank Lewis at nr. 3.

You have given me two reasons.

Louis and Ali take the top two spots in whatever order you prefer.

After that the field is wide open and there are a lot of viable contenders for the No3 slot.

    Lewis's statistics are prety impresive.

Lewis has a lot of depth to his resume in terms or ranked fighters beaten and he is quite high in the quality of oposition stakes. If he hadnt got starched by Ramhan it would be almost imposible to keep him out of the top five.

In short I dont think it is unreasonable to rank him at No 3 or No 10. I would not think that either position was unrealistic.

But head to head could you see Ali or Louis beating him, I would give Joe Louis virtually no chance.

If they have both hands free they have a briliant chance.

Lewis may not have the three decades of hype of Ali nor the nostalgia of Louis but with his size, strength and smarts he would beat both.

Does that make Lewis the greatest HWT boxer ever? I believe so.

As Janitor said, I think one could make an arguement for Lewis to be ranked anywhere between 3-10. The same could be said about Marciano, Johnson, Foreman, Dempsey, etc. I would have said Holmes but I think he's more in the range of 3rd to 6th.

How in your opinion, could two of the greatest heavyweights of all time, not stand a chance against a man who was Ko'd by Oliver McCall, Ko'd by Hasim Rahman, outjabbed for several rounds by Frank Bruno, and arguably should have received a draw against a declining Mercer? Now, I realize these things are not so simple, and we could just as easily say that Louis was floored by Galento and Ali was beaten by Norton, therefore Lewis should have no problem, which is just as equally oversimplified. Do I think that Lewis could potentially beat both men? My answer is yes. But, your statement about Louis as having " Virtually no chance ", is not very reasonable.

Of all the great Heavyweights mentioned, Ali, Louis, Dempsey, Marciano,Tunney,Holmes, Johnson, Ect. Only Lewis was knocked out cleanly in his prime, Not once but TWICE! Which doesn't exactly help his cause, or legacy. (Louis was KO'ed actually before his prime, by a seasoned veteran).

Lewis was KO'd in his prime once due to believing he could stop Rahman by training half assed, he got complainant.

The Lewis of the Pepe Correa years was not 'Prime'.

    #3 or #4 - sounds about right.

I've yet to hear a convincing argument why Tyson should be ranked aboved Lewis.

In the lower half of the top 10 is where I'd put him. I just never got the feeling that I was watching real greatness at work when I saw him fight.
Put it this way - I don't think he was light years better than Holyfield or Tyson (if at all) and I'd put neither of them in the top 3 either. (Lower half of the top 10.)

Head to head? Means nothing to me, unless we're specifically talking about that.

    That's funny!

Then I suppose Dempsey, Marciano, Frazier, and a host of other fighters also retired too early.
