If Nunn stayed out of his old neighborhood and away from the drugs, he could have solidified himself as one of the greatest Middleweights to come out of the 90s. He was that good, and was probably on his way to a points win in the Toney fight had he not gotten caught. Close fight, though.

Depends if he can find the kind of form that he had when he fought Tate again.

He got a gift decision against Cordoba, after Toney so fi he fights like that then he would have lost again, probably by decision.

I dont think Nunn had the mental toughness to do it...He was Living proof that even a ton of natural talent isnt all what boxing is about.

If Nunn was a 100% he would easily outbox Toney.Reggie Johnson almost beat Toney and he's not even close to Nun.

For Nunn to even have a chance at beating Toney, he'd have to get himself back in tip top shape, put everything together perfectly, and make a concentrated effort to avoid his bad habit of laying on the inside. But IMO he was already slipping when he fought Toney the first time, and likely would've only got beaten worse in the rematch. Heck, the fact that he didn't take the rematch pretty much settles that issue in my mind.

I do not think so, Toney was coming on strong, and anyway even if you were right, it sometimes pays to be lucky rather than good, and if you are both, well then you go unbeaten for 40 odd fights like Toney.

As for the original question, no I do not see Nunn winning a rematch, Nunn was never quite the same after Kalambay; indeed the Barkley fight was the start of his slide.

That said Toney/Nunn was a big upset, that I certainly never picked.

If Toney was "lucky" in that fight it was in that Nunn had gotten away from his boxing skills in last couple of fights and fell into a bad habit of laying on the inside and just looking to overpower his opponents. But I thought Toney fought a very good fight all the way though (even when he was behind on points) and did a good job of sucking Nunn into the fight he wanted and breaking him down.

toney made it to 40-0 because the majority of the fighters who he fought were little known bums, i still remains a mystery why he was'nt fighting consistantly championship level when he had the belts were guys like jackson,G-man, eubank, that scared to fight him? and lets not fool ourselves, he was given all he could handle by mccalum

Tony didn't fight a lot of bums. He was brought up the way a fighter should and got the experience needed to be champion. He fought less bums than Jones did at the time.

Not quite but people tend to dwell on the knockdown round to much. In fact I would say a lot of people have only seen that round and make their assumptions for the rest of the fight based on that.

I didnt see it as controversial but complete domination?..Dont know about that.

I disagree with thse who say Toney got lucky. He had staggered Nunn a few times leading up to the KO, it was only a matter of time.

He would have lost the same way in my opinion - by KO.

That was the gameplan he was trying the execute and it wasnt the first nor last time JT would do something like that..Of course he didnt want to be that far behind on points and clearly getting outboxed earlier.
But the dynamic of that fight had been gradually changing for a couple of rounds before the 11th.

Maybe. There is this notio that Toney only won the fight because of a lucky punch but I don't agree. Nunn may have thrown more punches but Toney got close to him and was breaking him down bit by bit throughout the fight. Dundee was telling Nunn off all the way through for letting Toney get inside him. Toney softened him up and went for the ko and he got it. I don't think he gets nearly enough credit for this win. To listen to some people you'd think Nunn completely dominated him and Toney won by pure luck.
