No way would have Calzaghe beaten this guy

The whole thing is boring to me now. I only get drawn on it when I see people trying to eulogise Calzaghe following his showboating cringefest against a shot fighter. I'll never forgive him for that.

I think a prime Roy beats Joe Calzaghe, but anyone who thinks iut would look anything like the a Vinnie Paz style whooping is just a plain hater.

I didn't like it either man, and this doesn't vindicate it but we've seen Jones do the same **** to fighters clearly over matched himself....

Ali did it to a decrepit Moore...

Sometimes I think boxers in the zone do these things, rightly or wrongly. (Wrongly for me).

Joe knew that was how Roy liked to do it and played him at his own game Roy's just as guilty of doing it many other opponents.
I have zero sympathy but Joe had some sympathy and used the pissing around kidology to play out the fight and not finish Roy as I feel he could have done

So, in the minds of Calzaghe apologists/zealots/fanboys, two wrongs make a right presumably.

Are you placing yourself in one of the three categories referenced above?

    Fair point!

Yeah, it wasn't a fun fight to watch tbh. I've never been a huge Jones fan (despite respecting his extraordinary talent) but it just didn't feel right watching this formerly untouchable great reduced to that shell....especially given the fact that he often said in the past he asserted that he would get out at the top.

Didn't enjoy the showboating one iota.

I'm guessing a few of his most doe-eyed admirers will curl up under their duvets and sob when they read this, but Roy Jones would have outclassed and dominated Joe Calzaghe had they fought at any point between 1997 and 2003 - even though I think Jones's peak was 1994-96. From when Joe won his title from Eubank up until Jones moved up to fight Ruiz, there was a six year window. Had that fight happened at any time, Joe would have been soundly beaten, I genuinely believe that. It's no slight on Joe, he just was not on anywhere near the same level as Superman. But then again, who was?? Bernard Hopkins wasn't. James Toney wasn't. And Joe Calzaghe certainly wasn't. A man who went life and death with Robin Reid, and went to points with Rick Thornberry and Miguel Angel Jiminez was NOT giving one of the most talented fighters in history many problems. The only guy who gave Jones any trouble at all in this period was Montell Griffin, who was a lightheavyweight with Eddie Futch in his corner, and after some very competitive rounds, Jones was closing in on yet another stoppage win before the DQ. Oh, and Jones (shaken from his complacency after that fight) annihilated him in 1 round not long after. While Calzaghe was beating some absolutely deplorable opposition at 168, Jones cleared out 175 beating naturally bigger men than himself, leaving only Michalczewski standing in his division. When I watch fights like Virgil Hill, Richard Hall, Clinton Woods, Jones was just another level entirely. As I said, it's no slight on Joe. It's like comparing Aaron Pryor to Sugar Ray Leonard or Antonio Cervantes to Roberto Duran. All quality fighters, all fought in the same eras, all could've fought each other when at their peaks but didn't, but anyone with any real boxing knowledge knows who would've won if they had. A different level of fighter.

You reap what you sow, if you watch the fight closely RJJ started it anyway, if Jones had got on top he would have done all that shite himself for sure.

Good post. It really puzzles me that some think Calzaghe would have been competitive with a prime Jones.

Calzaghe would have beaten Jones, prime for prime.

Jones looks good here, but if you think that he could deal with Calzaghe's feints then you are likely incorrect. All these fighter in the videos were just waiting to be hit. Calzaghe would be constantly moving every part of his body, bewildering and disorientating Jones.

People get mislead by highlight videos, of course he looks even more superhuman than Calzaghe in his best moments compared with Calzaghe's average moments.

Jones couldn't do anything shown here whilst Calzaghe is flailing his arms around like a demented, more refined, better looking, taller Harry Greb. Calzaghe's slaps would bugger Jones up a treat. Jones never had to deal with anything like it, and couldn't of. He lacks a certain amount of skill, and would not be able to adapt to the unorthodox but brilliantly effective Calzaghe. Athletic talent would not be enough!

In every video of Jones humiliating fighter, notice how none are windmilling and slapping him or even trying to.
