Pryor famously only ever used 5kg weights. Boxers aren't supposed to bulk up using weights, it should be done naturally through cardio. Apparently anyway.

The way Ray Robinson trained back in the 1930's roughly the same way I trained in the 1960's. Old fashioned boxing training was really just a specialized form of calisthenics. It is simple, effective and relatively inexpensive. The problem with it is that it becomes rather boring and that is why boxers are notoriously negligent with their training. Everything changed in 1977 when Arnold Schwarzenegger starred in a movie called Pumping Iron. That is the point where weightlifting suddenly became a necessity in nearly every sport including boxing. Why you ask? The answer to that question is very easy, calisthenics are BORING! When you pump up your muscles you get a rush that you will never get from the old fashioned stuff. Training became fun when when the weights came out. Boxers are still negligent with their training, proper training that is. But I have noticed these past 30 years there are a lot more muscular boxers than there once was.

You can still bulk up, but your going to have a larger proportion of fast twitch type 2 a into a type of slow twitch muscle. Thing is, you need to have a good genetic profile which is default/what you are born with in order to have a good base of type 2 b fast twitch muscles (the type that are purely glycogen reliant and most powerful)

You cant ever grow more muscle fibres, you can only make the ones you have bigger. Meaning if there is a muscle thread within, say your bicep.. If you biceps get huge, that thread is not going to multiply, rather the thread is just going to get bigger.

To explain better.. There are three muscle types in your body

Type 1 a (slow twitch) which rely on oxygen, made for endurance

Type 2 a (fast twitch) Which rely on both glycogen and oxygen.

Type 2 b (fast twitch) which rely on glycogen only. (made for very fast twitch, powerful movements, only rely on energy stored within them)

Type 2 a (fast twitch) can make a sort of transition to a slow twitch fibre, in that it starts to rely on myoglobin (blood within the muscle to supply it oxygen) more than it does glycogen. Once these muscle start to take on myoglobin, they shift from more of a fast twitch muscle, to a slow twitch muscle.. It is difficult to transition these muscle back to a state of slow twitch, though it is possible.

That kinda confirms my point, he didn't need it before that because he already did a very effective form of sports specific resistance training.

Cus D'Amato certainly didn't teach Tyson to lift weights. History shows that when Tyson got away from his original training he started getting hit and losing fights.

in his autobiography he said he didn't swim or lift weights because he didn't want to "confuse his boxing muscles."

I believe old school is best, what did your training involve like how many press up, pull ups, sit up, miles run etc
