We can talk about Hopkins if you like, but I thought this was a thread about Calzaghe. I was there first hand to see the beatdown Hopkins gave Pavlik thank you. It was fantastic.:good

I cannot be arsed joining in this debate too much.... Calzaghe despite been a really nice guy and having an impressive record is the most single most over-rated fighter i've come across in nearly 20 years in the sport.

His record falls to pieces under closer scrunity. The reason he is unbeaten is he has fought only one or two opponents who were capable of pushing him close and guess what .. they nearly beat him. Hopkins and Reid. Every other fighter had reached the passed their best stage or never really had a best.. As for the Kessler win continually been brought up!! Whats Kessler done since? He's hardly set the world on fire like some were predicting... just more low key world title bouts.

The middle, light heavy and super middle divisions gave Calzaghe plenty of credible opposition to fight but none of the big matches ever took place. Calzaghe had a great record but put prime Nigel Benn or prime Chris Eubank in those same fights and whats their record? Do you think Jones would have lost a round against any of Calzaghes opposition? Calzaghes fitness is incredible but it would take more then fitness to beat a truly great fighter and Hopkins proved that only the judges got it wrong.

I bet that was great but could you see the action properly?Never been to a boxing match I always meant to go but now moved away from London.
Would like to go to the Hatton fight but being realistic it would probably cost a couple of grand for me and the missus

    Lets remeber as well

When we talk of Calzaghes long unbeaten record and long WBO title reign as the greatest in British Boxing History

Lets remeber Eubank also went 43 fights unbeaten and was a WBO Champion not as long as Joe but for 5+ years

Eubank only started losing in his final few fights and he was unbeaten for a long time he fought a prime Nigel Benn and a prime Michael Watson
so his record is comparable to Calzaghes

In my personal view.......and a poll was done on this where the majority would disagree with me and thats ok

I believe a prime Eubank beats a prime Calzaghe

The reason for this is Eubank has a iron chin and even though he was floored by Calzaghe he took everything for 12 rounds at the tail end of his career.

He has been in there with punchers like Benn, etc and would take everything Joe slaps at him.

But on the counter Chris would have the power to hurt Calzaghe and I just feel he is sneaky and smart enough to do it with crisp counter punching.

A prime Calzaghe would bring the best out of a Prime Eubank because Calzaghe would make him fight with his relentless style. Eubank could not afford to have one of his lazy nights. I take Eubank over Calzaghe in a really cracking fight.

I got no regrets making this thread though

As prime Roy Jones is my favorite fighter ever - because he is simply the best pro boxer I have ever seen in my time

Yeah ok then Mr Insider, Calzaghe forgot that Jones had knocked him flat on his arse and hurt him, and chose not to return the favour when he easily could have done. Man, I wish I had the same knowledge and insight as you, you ex-pro expert.

Evander Holyfield was no where near his peak, when he faced Mike Tyson. The question is would a peak Mike Tyson beat Evander Holyfield...?

    No..

I will tell you something, James Toney was more of a test for Roy Jones than Calzaghe would ever have been. Joe is a good fighter, who has had a great career, but a prime RJJ is a different level, he was without peers.

My "cockhead" comments were harsh and out of order fair comment there I apologise.

But for probably the most arrogant poster on the forum to call me arrogant is a bit hypocritical.

What I am getting at really is to suggest that a prime Roy Jones would destroy a boxer as talented as a prime Joe Calzaghe is just pure ignorance and I stand by that whether it's someone's opinion or not.

We aren't talking about a normal world class boxer here when talking these two, we are talking elite simple as that and a prime Jones or Calzaghe isn't getting destroyed by anyone in their weight class.
