Gomez is a highly skilled Cuban southpaw who has lost only one fight. I've never seen that match, but despite it being a first round technical knockout, i think he's got a good chance to upset Vitali. Mainly because the man is 37 years old and slowing down. Klitschko is the favorite, but Gomez has the potential to beat him at this point. He looked impressive in shutting out McCall and the Ukranian powerhouse Vladimir Virchis. Virchis has little skill but huge punching power. Gomez was never really bothered by it and won a rather easy decision, with his handspeed and better technique.

I think the question is whether his speed and straight left can offset Vitali's agression, akward style and high workrate.

Well, Gomez being 35 y.o is not a young buck either. The problem for Gomez is that he does not possess the power to bother Vitaly. Vitaly will stalk him, jabbing his head off, and most likely KO him.

Take care of the Mandatory and then make some real fights. The Heavyweight Division needs some fire.

I agree that Vitali has to keep his obligations so he can then try, once again, to get the Valuev Chageev winner in the ring.

They have just been turned down, but if Chagaev beats Valuev, maybe he'll finally do what he says he wants to do, and unify with one of the K Brothers.

Anyway, Gomez is about as good of a test as anyone else out there, aside from Haye, Valeuv, and Chagaev. Those are not available, so Gomez is certainly worth a titleshot. Especailly seeing as how he has but one loss, and has beaten both McCall and Virchis to get his mandatory status.

    Looking forward to this fight.

If Gomez turns up motivated for once, I think Vitali is in for one tough night.

That said, I think he has enough to atleast nick a decision. Which I think he will.

    Based on what?

I know Vitali hit hard in his prime, and they say the punch is the last thing to go, but he didn't manage to put Peter on the canvas with all the shots he landed, what makes you think he's going to knock out Gomez, a guy with a sturdy chin and who's harder to catch than Peter.

Don't be fooled by his TKO1 loss to Yanqui Diaz, the guy has a good chin. He recently went 12 with Vladimir Virchis, and that guy hits insanely hard.

did you see the Virchis fight? Virchis did not land one meaningful punch the whole fight. Gomez does not have a sturdy Chin either. Just standing in the ring with a guy like Virchis means nothing about his Chin when the guy did not get a glove laid on him. The Virchis fight proved nothing about his Chin.
