Yeah, I read about that in lesters book. He said that at the weigh in sichula wouldnt shake his hand and stared at him as though he hated white men, I'd say old John must've had a rough trot
SMF... sorry mate... incorrect.... the guy was a jugde, ref. aurthor... had his own tv show... regarding boxing... most prominant in the 60's..
A clue might help you SMF... He had tv show "....... boxing corner".. Wrote such books as 'Fight for your life' and 'The fighting Sands'... He also layed claim to having the second Mitchell Library.... A heavy influence in 'Fighter magazine' also.... Judged the Rose vs Rudkin bout...... too much info...
Not sure of the significance of the 30 Milburn Street address? But Michael J Clarke wrote the book on the Sands Bros, and with great passion, it's a ripper book. I think Clarke's father was also a great boxing man.
Interesting you say that CHB... I have a copy of the 'fighting sands'.... 'ray mitchels boxing quiz'... and 'fight for your life'... I met Ray in Sydney, at his home... '95... He signed the lot for me.. and constantly returned letters for a long time??? Might be a different Sands book you refer too??? 'The fighting Sands' is a book, soft cover, 15cm x 10cm....
The book I read had a green cover (borrowed from library). Had a search and found some info on it. Worth a visit to www.michaeljclarkeboxing.com. See also pic below of Clarke with his book. From memory Clarke's father was a mate of Dave Sands' trainer Tom Maguire. There's certainly a strong link and the book is brilliant! This content is protected
Not sure if this one's been solved yet? Believe it was a colourful character and friend of Ned's called Wild Wright. Ned and Wild Wright got busted for horse steeling. Ned was captured first and received 3yrs for receiving stolen horses. It took the police a few weeks longer to catch Wild Wright, but he received 18 months for riding a stolen horse (Ned lent one to him).
Good call CHB... What was 'Wilds' real fisrt name..??? He hated the name, and very few had the ability to call him the name...
Isaiah - bit like the man called Sue - you'd have to be able to fight! During the 1970's an Aussie contested a Commonwealth title fight that resulted in a KO in spectacularly short time (Ist round)....who was the Aussie, and who was his opponent?
