Who has ever hit Calzaghe with a jab? I just cannot remember anyone establishing it against him.

Also people must give credit to Evander Holyfield, who neutralised Riddick Bowe's big jab. With his very own, double ended Jab and movement.

If anybody was going to trouble Calzaghe with a jab it would have been Kessler. He had a couple of moments early on, but this is a guy that has previously and since dominated every minute of every round in most instances purely with a jab and it didn't happen for him.

Calzaghe is brilliant at taking away a jab and establishing his own with great footwork. Its one of his biggest strengths for sure. Hopkins does it well in a defensive way with extremely good circling footwork and leaning down and away from punches.

I just wonder if Hopkins thinks a jab is a weakness. A chance to be exploited, a wasted punch. Certainly in his last few fights, I think you could count the average number of jabs thrown by Hopkins on one hand.

    Calzaghe is a great mention.

Perhaps not the best ever, but very have landed more than a handful of jabs on Wlad...

I think Hopkins used it very well against Pavlik. Sparingly indeed, but his was actually the more impressive and effective jab rather than Pavlik's which would have been a surprise to many before the fight.

I think its more a question of him trying to conserve as much energy as possible, and he likes to draw guys in and counter or leap in himself. So the jab does not really feature in this gameplan, he usually just flicks it out as a range finder.

Hopkins used the right hand lead exceptionally against Pavlik, rather than any other weapon.

Hopkins used everything but the kitchen sink against Pavlik.

If you are familiar with Hops you were expecting the sneak right, but he was even getting there with lead left hooks and uppercuts. Once he got Pavlik moving laterally everything was there for him.

There was one slo-mo sequence they showed where he threw such a compact right hand on the inside, that it landed and he still had time to block Kelly's counter with his right elbow. The man is a walking defensive textbook.

I can't remember which round it was, but at one point Richardson said something like; "Ain't nobody ever out jabbed this kid, but he ain't fought nobody with a jab like yours. Keep workin' it."

MAB and Morales do set my world alight I have to say, as do JMM and Pac. JMM is great. I thought he lost the first Pac fight but won the second. His performance against Casamayor all things considered is an exceptional one. If you haven't seen it yet track it down.

If this thread had a poll, Hopkins would lead by a landslide.

Hopkins is good at nullifying fighters in general.

Sweet Pea was great at using his own jab to stop his opponent from establishing theirs.

By the way, I really enjoy these technical debates, so to the poster who tried flaming at the start of the thread, do one.
