Did the 90's heavyweights have as much talent as the 70's?

The 90's sure had its share of talent that went unnoticed. The talent was so deep but the matchmaking was so horrible.

We had guys like David Tua, Razor Ruddock, Tommy Morrison, Ray Mercer, Andrew Golota, Riddick Bowe, Olver Mccall, Evander Holyfield, Lennox Lewis, Ike Ibeabuchi...

Plus many more contenders. The 70's had its share of talent but i believe the 90's had an equal amount that went unnoticed due to poor matchmaking, The Media'a fascination with Mike Tyson, and Don King Politics!

The 70's were great because of the talent, good matchmaking, and less politics. Plus when you throw in the fact that Ali was willing to fight all comers, it made for hell of a decade.

The 90's was equal in talent though:deal

the 90's was really strong but still a bit behind the 70's. the 70's had three of the best hw of all time in ali, frazier and foreman. but the 90's really had the potential to get close to the heights of that era

Talent? Sure, and if not a pure 100% then damned close.

The willpower and desire to maximize it?

    No.

If the fighters from the 90's (majority) had the hunger of the ledgends from the 70's they would be no match for any heavyweight through time, unfortunately there was some amazing money around that quenched the hunger pangs of the naturaly talented guys, that made them prepare and box like they were content to just show up.. Pound for pound the heavyweights from the 70's were just a harder beast than the 90's crew , but that is still a great compliment to all fighters concerned.. they were a very talented and tough bunch..

    Well said.

I think massive, undeserved paychecks really started for the heavies in the 80's. The glamor decade, and that wasn't just for boxing. Everything in excess, really.

Mike Tyson's star and therefore massive paydays more or less made a lot fighters lazy.

The 90's fighters were big and strong, but one should not necissarily mistake that for talent. Might be a provoking statement, but steroids had without much doubt a lot to do with their physical formidability. Bowe, Lewis and Holyfield were indeed very talented, though.

But for pure talent the lost generations of the 80's looks perhaps the best. Witherspoon, Tubbs, Thomas etc - that was some unrealised potential, to be sure.

I think Lewis, Holyfield and Bowe would have been competitive in just about any era truthfully.

Would the 70's have been a different era if one or all of these men were around.

    ??????????????

Yes, of course, steroids had no part in the 70's either.

I think for the most part the 90's was superior in terms of over all talent with the single most talented fighter being Ali, who was a 70's fighter.

70's were vastly overrated. 60's had more talent. 90's had way more talent. 80's were on par.

Of course not. It's not as if they were invented and distributed in the 50's by Olympic trainers or anything like that. Pure poppycock :thumbsup

You can't seriously believe that it was used as much.

I think it is fair to put 90s talent next to the 70s.

1990's heavyweights had considerably more talent than the 1970's.
