Well, for those of you who don't know (i'm sure a lot of you remember) I trained this kid for toughman. It's what he wanted to do, and I wanted to train him. So, yesterday was the actual fight. Here's the first thing that pissed me off. The kid only needed to make 184.9 and below to enter LHW. He weighed in the day before at 185 WITH clothes on. He decides to be a damned fool, and not eat 24 hours before weighin! (I knew nothing about)..Which shows apparently how much this kid wanted to fight. SO, he's coming back, and he doesn't even know what he weighs (he doesn't bother to check his weight yesterday when he gets up). He comes to the gym with me, and I'm pretty anxious to see if he can make it. Steps on the scale, and he's 179! I knew that wasn't good...So, I take him over to get him weighed, and they weigh him at 178. He brought tons of food...Good energy food before a fight. I'm sitting in the audience, and I know the guy who won HW last year, and he comes over to me saying "Your kid got a guy that the whole locker room is scared to fight." I look at his opponent, and immediately knew my guy was in trouble. I also live in W.V (mainly white) and the kid was black...Lots of hate in this state so you got to tough to be black here. This guy wasn't huge (like 5'11 175), but he had the build of a pro boxer (wide back, long lats, very strong, and muscular). My guys 6'5. I told him soon as you come out I want you to blast him with a 1-1-2, and make him respect you. Black guy jumps on my guy, My guy blasts him off, working the uppercut when this kid gets inside, my guys dancing around. He didn't fire enough combinations, and would mainly throw one punch at a time (told him not to). It's a good back and forth fight. The black kid throws a Shane Mosley hook and snaps his neck back (BRUTAL). My kid still comes at him firing. He puts the black kid on the ropes, but he counter punches my guy with a MASSIVE right hand that saw my kids mouthpeice go to row 12!! He takes a couple more shots, and finally goes down to end round 1. I told him to clinch...Which he didn't do either, but he was about KOed on his feet. My kid comes back for Round 2, fighting hard, but he was definitely hurt. Gets caught again, and goes down again. He gets up at 6, but they stopped the fight...and rightfully so. I was still pretty proud of my guy. He backed the other guy up quite a few times, and the shots he took, and the heart he had...Nothing to be ashamed of I told him. I honestly don't know if I was in the ring with the black kid...That I could have even beat him. He was a VERY SKILLED fighter. My kid got hit so hard that after his match I asked him how he was doing, and he asks me "Did I go down?" He wasn't hurt or anything...Just got his damn bell rung. If he'd tighten up his defense (sometimes he'll throw and drop that hand lazily) I think he would had a decent shot. That....And if he wasn't so damn weight drained, and mentally exhausted. How much did that NOT EATING take out of him? He made weight at 5:30, and then ate, and hydrated himself back up, and fought around 8....but after not eating 24 hours you have to be pretty effected I'd think....
you really need to get your guy some proper amatuer fights (if you can) the guy sounds good but cant really tell if your guy did good by not seeing a fight good luck to both of yous also who has your guy been sparring just you
i know but how can the athorities prove you competed? i dont know alot on these matters also to answer the question Primenal he could have done better he could have won
Yeah. Kind of ******ed you can't fight amatuers after a toughman (or that's what I heard). You can have up to 5 amatuers fight before you cannot fight toughman, but once you fight one toughman you can't fight any amatuers. One guy told me on here because some toughmans give everybody some money. This one in W.V...Only the winners receive the $. I asked this question basically to see just how much it took away from him starving himself. I just called him to talk about the fight, and he said his legs were already so weak, and he was just so drained. The kid has tons of heart for sure...At his state I'm amazed he did what he did.
What is that? BTW: To give an update the black kid did win that division, but I was a little wrong at how good he was. He was definitely good, but by no means unbeatable. He'd just sit back, wait to counter punch, and soon as somebody would throw a few punches he'd leap in with a hayemaker, and follow up with more. That's all he had...Hayemakers, and the occasional jab. When he got against people around his physichal size he couldn't rock them. I think he rocked my boy so well cuz he was just so drained and weak...My kid told me his legs were weak before the fight. Regardless he wants to fight in the next toughman, and this time I told him to stay around that weight so he didn't need to drain, get more sparring in, and tighten up his defense.
You mean who do I have him sparring. I mainly had to spar him myself...I self trained him, and only had about a month and a half. I'm 5'7, 165...Some guys were around the same size, but the black guy was about 5'11 180. Plus, he was throwing hayemakers from Austrailia. The last few weeks I had him spar a couple other guys. Somebody who was 6'2 210 (big muscle guy), and this guy nailed my guy in the face quite a few times. The boy damn sure has heart, and can take a damn punch I found out! Then I had a martial arts instructor spar him that I used to spar with all the time, but he's got a much different boxing style. He went back to school (goes like 150 miles away from me), and he found a couple of bums to spar around his size. I'm thinking he couldn't take a punch because he was simply to weight drained, and worn out. I'll find out next time he fights though.
i think you need to get him sparring more guys with a differnt variety of styles. i had this problem in my last fight as most of the guys in my club are boxers and i go in a fight with a brawler and dont know much to do. I m getting more sparing with better boxers. Get him in a gym with alot of fighters to get different styles experiance. theres alot of factors that can decrease your punch resistance so dont get to hung up on it. i dont doubt from what you say your by has a good chin and heart. good luck to both of yous
Sorry i worded that wierd- smokers are unoffical amatuer bouts-gyms do them all the time.Your kid could fght in those.
Oh. I'll check up on it. Thanks a bunch. As for him sparring. Yeah, i wanted to get him a lot of aggressive sparring partners, but never had much time. He lives near me...but goes to school like 150 miles away. So, I had thanksgiving break, and his Christmas break. The rest.....Was up to him.
maybe he should work on techinque first before sparring. And if he is to spar make sure its controlled-like maybe he works on just slipping/blocking punches and such. You want to stay away from too much hard sparring-it doesn't do anyone any good to take alot of punishment in the gym.Thats the biggest mistake i always see-people having wars when sparring instead of working on things.
