well this is just a shitty fight but the good news it that its in only 2 months so if he's smart he will go ahead and schedule another one for late June
He would love to fight some bigger names - but they have to agree to fight him. He can't just call Taylor and say " Hey Jermain, wanna fight? Shall we say.. 10 million?" I don't think swiching promoters is going to help that. Look at Abraham. He couldn't even get a fight with Felix Sturm. Calzaghe couldn't get a fight with Hopkins for ages, even though negotiations were always under way. And don't even begin talking about how RJJ ducked DM for year after year.
Bute, Andrade rematch, Mundine rematch, Taylor, Froch, Bika, Green, Balzay, and Inkin are all better fights than Lasen. People are criticizing Taylor for taking on Green but at least Green is top10 in the division.
So what should Kessler do, if he wins this fight and is freed from his Palle contract? Which American promotor would be good for him? When does he has to fight his next mandatory? I think, and hope, that after this fight he will only accept fights that are staged in America against named opponents or unification fights. The only European fight that makes sense is against Froch. But, it is of course never easy to get the fights you want, seems like there has been troubles getting them for Kessler in 2008-2009 so far.
It sure is a garbage fight bye most standards. However, trying to find some light in the darkness, I think a lot of people would like to see Big mouth Mads Larsen getting his ass kicked. Mr. Larsen has, among other things, been talking about how he thinks boxing fans deserves this fight. I guess he smoked too much :spliff.
It's a good stay busy fight for Kessler in my view, but what next? Kessler fights twice a year and unless he'll fight someone at least as good as Bika, Balzsay, Inkin or Froch next, it will have been another year gone with not much to show for it. Given his fighting style, time will be catching up with him fast, alas. It must be very frustrating for Kessler. If Bute gets past Zuniga and then the Andrade vs. Tsypko winner, they should both be expected to fight each other. If the Americans aren't interested, and if Taylor won't face either, they might as well arrange everything between themselves, for a fight in Montreal, Copenhagen or Germany, whichever pays best, early 2010 at the latest.
Since Froch has 2 mandatories to make, and we are not close to see the first one, the possibility of Kessler-Froch this year is very thin. It would be at the end of the year. Kessler will have time to fight another mandatory before facing anyone else. Gusmyl Perdomo. That will add to the list of meaningful opponents since the Calzaghe fight. Kessler is wasting precious time. He's too good to face such opponents.
Froch vs. Kessler would be a genuinely decent matchup compared to this. Kessler should come to the States and fight Taylor. I think Jermain would fight him with home advantage and I think Kessler would still beat him. Though no doubt THE fight at SMW is Bute vs. Kessler. Kessler by late stoppage. Although the perfect fight to announce him in the States (and a viable one as chief support to a bigger fight or a Showtime main event) has got to be Kessler vs. Bika. Bika comes to fight, has an iron chin, but I think Kessler's straight shots would beat Bika's winging punches and see him coast to a UD in a fight where he takes a fair few punches too.
Correct. Dawson, the huge LHW who boils down from 200-plus to make 175 -- yet somehow miraculously fought at 160 as recently as 2005 -- was not an appropriate opponent for Kessler according to Palle.
I agree with some of your points, but this is a bunch of god damn bull****. Jones had no incentive to combat DM, who never bothered to push for the fight. If you want a shot at the PfP No. 1, you have to command the fight by gaining fans and the respect of the networks. DM did neither, and thus is nothing but a footnote to Roy's long reign of dominance at 175.
