Golota beats him to a pulp and stops him inside of 6. Willard has the skillset of a journeyman and would be a punching bag against a technically, athletically, far superior boxer like Golota.
Willard was not that bad...Golota was more of a modern speciman (juice) I see it being a rough and tumble 10-15 rds and Willard may have the better pedigree, Willard took a good wack and Golota had power but he was not a Dempsey by any means....Willard UD 15...Willard was unskilled but was big and rugged and durable for the most part...Golota always found a way to lose the big ones
Oh God, atsch Looking at what Golata did to a far superior boxer/athlete like Riddick Bowe, I'd say he crucifies Willard. Jess fought in an era where he enjoyed an obscene size advantage over his opponents and as Chris said, had the skillset of a journeyman. Chris was also being generous ( presumably to show some degree of respect for the old school ), by giving Willard the benefit of the doubt in lasting 6 rounds. Golata's strait jab and inside fighting ability, along with his power will get to Willard early and stop him before either man really has time to build up a sweat. This is a terrible mismatch.
Could be but I do remember Golota having a hard time vs Journey man Corrie Sanders (who had size) and Grant.(KO"D BY)..Golota found a way to make it close over Ruiz and Byrd and Mollo....and could not stop washed up Orlin Norris (who was KO'd in 1 by Vitali and Jesse Furgeson and Tim Witherspoon..Andrew was also stopped quick by Tyson,Lewis and Brewster and lately Austiin and did manage to lose twice over the easy to hit Bowe ....Say what you want about Willards skill level it was zero but he showed heart vs Johnson and Dempsey....What was Golota's BEST WIN?
As crude as Willard was, he took a terrible beating from Dempsey before wilting. I don't think Golota could dish out any worse punishment. I picked Golota to defeat Michael Grant when that fight was made. Grant broke Golota's will when he did not crumble. Golota wanted to quit on his stool after dropping Bowe in their rematch. Strong guys taking what Golota is dishing out seems to be a problem for Andrew. I expect Golota to totally outclass Willard before getting stopped in the 8th.
If you look at footage of Willard in realtime it becomes aparent that there is a bit more to him than first meets the eye. Even in the Dempsey fight he dosnt look much worse than Vitally Klitschko in the Sam Peter fight.
these old time boxers are denigrated too much I think. willard had an iron will and chin, golota was broken by a china chinned michael grant, he loses on that aspect alone.
Nothing Grant did "broke" Golota. Unless catching punches with your face all night long is more effective then I'm aware of. Golota broke under a lot of different kinds of stress over the course of his entire career.
