hey guys i was wondering what you think of Orzubek Nazarov
of the first soviet/russian speaking fighters to win a world title.

he won it at lightweight and defended it well, until he got his eye injuried from i remember but the story is not clear and shortly retired from the sport...

he looks very good on film and it he did not get injuried it would have been good to see him against mosley and stevie johnson, bazan etc....

what would his chances be there? how do you rate him

Though in his defence, it was only the Mendy fight.

I saw him knocking out Joey Gamache, but well, even Gatti knocked him out. I heard rumours, he was very handicapped going into the Mendy fight. I have seen 2,3 other fights of Nazarov, he looked rock solid and at the time i thought he was a very good fighter. But how good, i dont know.

well ofcourse he did not look in the mendy fight...from what i read he was preety much blind in one eye in that fight....

hard to look good in that shape against a world class guy...

in other fights when healthy he looked very good

like tonsetzer said it's sad we never found just good he really was

He was really good.Hit hard as hell.I think the other champions pretty much avoided having to face him-high risk low payday.
Put it this way-At the time of his reign I didn't really see too many boxers in his divison beating him when he was at his best.

i agree with the cobra here

but one thing kinda strikes me, when i watch his fight on youtube...

the negative reaction he gets from the audience....and to bring a different subject the whole bowe-golota riot....

it seems that in early-mid 90's eastern block fighters were not that welcome with most people in usa.

Nazarov was a bit of a rumored legend as a I remember. This mystical guy from Kyrgyzstan. I only ever saw the Gamache knockout and he looked very strong there.

How good was he? Mendy was a good boxer, I'm assuming he just got outboxed?

Not only was Gamache well past his best by then, but it was after Gatti's people and the commission blatantly fixed the weigh in in Gatti's favor, one of the most blatant and despicable acts of corruption ever in boxing. It very nearly got Gamache killed.

Nothing made me happier than seeing Gatti get his head bashed in by Baldomir and Gomez.

As per the original question, Nazarov looked to me like Winky Wright but with power. He was a good, aggressive southpaw technician, tough, and had solid power in both hands. Gamache was still considered a live contender when Nazarov destroyed him.

I would've liked to have seen him against DeLaHoya, or in a unification fight with the other long-time champion, Miguel Angel Gonzales. That would've told a lot about what he really had.

Mendy basically boxed like hell, outmaneuvered and held him, to win a decision. That's the only time I ever saw or heard of him being beaten.

I don't know how Nazarov would've done against the other big names of his era, but it seemed to me like none of them wanted any part of him. He was the proverbial elephant in the room in the lightweight division.

The man that made beating Gamache senseless years before Gatti did it. :scaredas:
