Lets not down play that...........being a very good fighter.........is a very good achievement Theres nothing Mere about it Calzaghe was one of the best British Fighters I seen in my lifetime
I used the word merely by comparison - not in a derogatory manner. I'd say he slots into a British top 10..... perhaps top 5 at a push - but let's not go overboard. Lewis is the #1 - it would take something extraordinary from a present British fighter to overhaul that.
Comments about Calzaghe at this stage have to be taken with a pinch of salt. People will say what they think they have to say, what the media want to hear and there's also the fact that they're getting caught up in the hype of him retiring. Benn also said 'there will never be another like him', as if Calzaghe has had some kind of unattainable career, which we all know is not true. I don't think this is the time where people will say 'You know what, Calzaghe wasn't all that you know'
hatton and benn are just fighters not experts mcguigan has alot of figth knowledge but i do think he has favourites if you want a real experts opnion go on the classic forum
Brendan Ingle said there will never be another as good as Naz for another 100 or 200 years A few years later Calzaghe is being hailed as never be another like him EVER. Every good / modern great fighter..........gets legendary things said about them Dont mean its true..........
I don't think there will be a time that is said, where's the next British fighter of Joe's calibre, nowhere thats where.
Thats a good idea:good There are some really smart hombres in there, guys who know the history of boxing inside out.
I think there will be. Especially in light of McGuigan saying he's in the top 5 EVER, Benn saying there'll never be another like him........there will be a backlash, because the previous comments are just bull****.
If the backlash does happen so what? they're is no one out there to take his place in Britain. I'm gutted Joe's gone without one more, I don't blame him but he was great value and a winner through and through.
Except Hatton,Haye,Froch,Khan..etc big fan of all, I just felt a bit more confident watching Calzaghe. Boxing's not mainstream like it used to be, I know no one down here who follows it.I used to have a couple of Pals who followed it a bit back in London but that was it. Look at America they're scratching around for champs
I was always confident watching Calzaghe, mainly because....'It's only Tocker Pudwell'.....'He's 43, he can't lose to an old man'......'He's 40 and been shot for 5 years, no worries here'....'He was **** on the contender, he has no chance' etc In Khan taking Barrera and Prescott, he's already taken on two more challenges than Calzaghe ever did. Hatton and Haye have obviously taken a lot more risks too.
Nope I was confident when he fought Lacy,Kessler,Hopkins he's a far better 'adaptable' fighter a Great fighter end off.forget Pudwell Hopkins fought shmuks too
