Just wondering, with all the Calzaghe retirement talk and reflecting on his career, Did Warren **** his career or make it, and does Frank make big fights?
Warren occasionally makes big fights, he's more concerned with reward vs risk though, which although not good from a fan's perspective is I suppose from a fighter's. I really can't say if he "****ed" Calzaghe's career or not, for example if there was a fight made with Jones when Jones was top of his game Calzaghe wouldn't be unbeaten today, probably ditto Hopkins and so on and so forth. Calzaghe was definately protected, I think they're thick as thieves in that regard, Calzaghe didn't want to risk a loss to make a big fight and Warren certainly didn't, Warren isn't entirely to blame. Maybe Warren made Calzaghe's career, he might have lost and maybe that would have meant he didn't stay in the game as long, he certainly wouldn't be getting all this praise if he wasn't unbeaten. On the other hand if he'd gone for huge fights and lost he'd get more respect from the fans who are fans of boxing rather than those who just like a couple of different fighters and defend them to the hilt no matter what. Six of one, half a dozen of the other.
rooq, I also though of the Benn - McLellan fight. I guess it was a coup getting Kostya Tszyu over as well. Then he did a few Tyson fights in the UK as well until Tyson beat the **** out of him over unpaid bills.
maloney promoted that one yeh warren was tysons co promoter and i think he did the francis fight tsyu hatton and mclellan benn were good was he ever involved in any of the fab fours fights
I think Calzaghe vs Kessler was the biggest fight he made without an ulterior motive. I bet when he made Hatton vs Tszyu he was DESPERATE (even more than TFFP & Scurla) for Hatton to lose. Not lose badly though.... give him a toughie for five or six and go out on his shield. That way he could retain him and keep him away from the big names, making a shitload of cash for himself. Surely Warren himself must have known, with their relationship declining that if Hatton won it was all over.... Ricky would leave and take control himself.
With Joe Calzaghe's debut on the undercard! I think bringing Kostya given his P4P status has to rank as the biggest. Closely followed by Naz v Kelley at MSG?
Got Don Curry over here in his first ever World Title fight promotion......thats a good coup Fought Colin Jones
I went on my first ever "proper" date that night. Me and a mate had a double date at the cinema and missed the fight. I didn't know that was a Frank Warren fight.
