He beat Alphabet beltholders. Did you know that Roy Jones in his whole career did not beat ONE Unified, Linear, or Undisputed Champion?
I understand that. But he beat more fighters that went on to win titles than ANYONE active today. Thats still an amazing achievement. Besides, he beat the best at 160, the best at 168 including P4P#1 James Toney, and he beat everyone at 175 with the exception of DM.
Maybe you don't understand. There are 4 "belts" if you count the WBO. That "he beat more champions" crap is garbage. Roy Jones never beat a unified, linear, or undisputed champion. That speaks volumes about him.
Too bad Roy did not beat THE Heavyweight Champion like Fitzsimmons did. Lennox Lewis was THE Heavyweight Champion. John Ruiz was a handpicked paper beltholder by Roy. :good
Fine have it your way. He beat more TITLISTS than anyone else. And he beat two fighters that were or would become P4P#1 in the sport. I place a large emphasis on what a fighter does after a bout. For example, Glenn Johnson, Clinton Woods, Bernard Hopkins, Virgil Hill and Julio Gonzales all went on to win world titles AFTER Roy Jones Jr. beat them. Of Calzaghe's wins, ONLY Mikkel Kessler ever won a world title following their bout.
For me its 3 things 1. Record: You dont have to be undefeated but you cant have 15 losses either. A fighters win % I feel is important whether they faced good competition or not. 2. Resume: There has to be at least 2 or 3 other ATG's in their resume and they would have to have beaten 2 out of 3 or at least 1 out of 2. If its only 1 out of 2 then their resume better be packed with good fighters to make up for the empty ATG great spots. 3. Dominance: Sure you can go 45-1-0 but if you have alot of questionable decisions (Valuev / Ottke come to mind) then that severly hurts your ATG status. If you have more then 2 or 3 SD's or MD's in really big fights on your record then your losing ground. If you have a guy thats 42-3-1 and out of those wins he completely dominated 38 of those wins, thats better then a 45-1-0 guy who only dominated 27 fights.
You cant dispute Roys accomplishements. his place in the ATG is well deserved and I have him ranked at ATG 35
Oh yea and throw in human decency. If you're gonna turn into a cocky, racist, greedy ******* who proves to be a walking piece of sh*t then no Hall of Fame for you. That may be just a personal thing with me but I'v known to many fighters that fit that criteria not to be bitter about it.
Lets be honest. If there were prizes handed out for careful picking of opponents throughout their careers BOTH Calzaghe and Jones Jr would be up there. Hopkins does not fall into the same category.
