Why is Pavlik a more popular fighter in the U.S, then say....Chad Dawson?

I will add to this, though I think it pretty much sums it up.

He is a very limited, predictable fighter who you wouldn't really expect to win. You look at him and you just assume is is an under-dog, and then you watch him fight and it's just amazing that he even wins at all. 1-2, 1-2, 1-2 over and over again.

Yet, being a bald, technicly lacking white-boy, he still manages to pull out exciting victories. It's hard not to side with him.

    Again, local fanbase.

Also, as impressive as some of Dawsons wins have been, they've been against old guys (Tarver, Johnson), and the worthy but relatively unknown Adamek. Not really PPV type matches.

Why is Pavlik more popular than Dawson? Let me see...

    -Exciting fighter willing to trade.
-Doesn't run away from mandatories or give up his title(s).
    -Gives possibly tough rematches.
    -Takes risky fights.
    -Has a fanbase.
    -Has charisma.
    -Seemingly a nice guy.

Oh yeah, and he's the undiputed MW champion of the world.

I'm going to quote you again, because it examplifies perfectly the old saying: "Nothing attracts a crowd, like a crowd". Like you say, once a fighter has tapped a constituency, a chain reaction of others are sure to follow suit to "see what's goin' on" that has everybody so excited.

Simply, Pavlik comes straight ahead and comes off the canvas his fair share of times to win. Overall, fans love brawlers over boxers.

    1. Pavlik is a KO fighter while Dawson is a more technical fighter.
    2. Before the Hopkins match, it really looked as though Pavlik was the next great middleweight. He may still be.
    3. Pavlik has had 3 "superfights" while Dawson has had none (yet).
    4. Dawson's best wins have been on Showtime, while Pavlik has been featured on HBO.
    5. Chad's best win was against Adamek, which looks A LOT more impressive now than in Feb., 07.
    6. Dawson looked average against Johnson.

I like both, I think its simply because Pavlik is a great white American hope and good and there aren't many of those.

I hope Dawson becomes more of a draw as if he is he could be in some superfights, maybe with Pavlik himself, maybe with 'Nard, maybe with Kessler/Taylor, maybe he moves upto Cruser or HW.

Putting Dawson to one side, Pavlik is hugely popular because he has got a white, working class fanbase. I don't use the race argument lightly, and I would not argue that it is the same as racism, it is simply that there is a huge contituency of which he appears to be a part, and therefore represent. In sport, I think this possibly means more in the US than most countries, though I could be very wrong.

I must emphasise that this is not racism. I compare it to my girlfirend and I. We're British and went to DC for the November election. I'm whiteand she's black. I'm a Politics graduate and she has absolutely no interest in it, but Obama was someone she with whom she could identify, and that meant a lot to her. Suddenly something that didn't interest her at all, became fascinating.

As for Dawson, his fights haven't been too high profile. I think among boxing fans he is greatly admired. He should be. I'd have loved to have seen the Calzaghe of the Lacy & Kessler fights vs the Dawson of the Tarver contest. It would have been a fabulous fight.

man... Pavlik beated Miranda and Taylor by KO, in FOTY candidate fights, while being the underdog....

Chad Dawson, is probably a more talented boxer... But he hasn't the kind of heroic victory's, Pavlik had. Not even close...

His decision win over Adamek was very good... Against Johnson he was lucky getting the decision.. And Tarver was way past his prime..

pavlik fought in great fights and won by ko. Dawson has looked boring in his big fights and is fighting Tarver again...why?

Is Dawson based in Connecticut? Part of what appeals to folks in this area is he was born, raised and STILL trains here. It is hard to hear him give an interview without a 'shout out' to the area. I'd be interested to know a history of trainer offers that was made to him. I know Steward wanted him after the first Taylor fight. Class act Manny. :-(
