Wlad will get the respect he deserves, when he retired. Same Lennox Lewis. Now he is respected as The Champ he was. But in his active time he gets alot of critics.
I think its because hes not all too exciting for a heavyweight... (ala Tyson, Holyfield, ect...) It seems he stays behind his jab a lot.
Second! In a few years we'll be sighing about how the heavyweight division has been hurting since Wlad retired. When will we have a lineal champ? When will someone even try to unify the titles? I wish Wlad would come back, at least he won.
To get back to the spirit of this post, I'd like to hear from those who don't think Wlad is a great or even very good fighter on: 1. If Wlad beats Haye and Chagaev/Valuev winner impressively in 2009, will he rate as a top 10 p4p? top 20? 2. If not, what can Wlad do to be considered a top 10 p4p and/or the legit heir to Lennox Lewis at heavyweight?
I'm not sure why Wlad dsesn't get the respect, as mentioned above it may be because he doesn't fight in America, or because he isn't American. I think must educated boxing fans enjoy (or at least appreciate) watching Wlad fight. He has a great Jab, controls must fight well by maintaining distance and can be ferocious as ilustrated by his high KO rate. Wlad's record speaks for itself and imo should have him in and around the top 10-15 p4p list
Because he's not an exciting fighter to a lot of people that want the next Mayweather or Tyson to be the HW champ, but Wladimir is a respectable man and is the Number 1 man at HW. Also people doubt his chin.
Wait until he is retired, then give it a few years.... the respect will come. He should definitely still get more respect now, but boxing fans are generally the worst sports fans in the world.
I think his recent "safety first" style is a turn off, even though he wins everytime now. Another drawback is when he gets hit he looks like he is going to **** green. He was much more entertaining when he destroyed or got destroyed.
I think many people still remember the brutal KO at the hands of Corrie Sanders and Wlad's gassing out against Brewster. But that was 5-6 years ago and since then Wlad has beaten Byrd, Peter, Brock, Williamson, Brewster, Austin, Ibragimov, Rahman and Thompson. He does need that "signature win" but I'm not sure an ideal opponent is out there. Vitaly is his only real rival and they won't fight. If Wlad does go through Haye, the Valuev/Chagaev winner, Povetkin and Arreola will that really change things in the eyes of the critics? Or is Wlad doomed to keep winning but to be thought a heavier version of Zsolt Erdei or Felix Sturm?
If only Vitali and Wlad could be meshed into a single boxer, THAT would be someone to reckon with. As it is, they both have some pretty big flaws as boxers, flaws that no one in their division has the ability to capitalize on. I will be very impressed if Wlad is able to beat Chagaev convincingly, but less so if Chagaev is in no better shape than he was against Drummond.
what are Vitali's huge flaws? people think he doesn't box well but he has the best rounds won / rounds lost ratio of all time. I would say his stamina is not the best but he has shown that he can pace himself very well. Apart from that, he is prone to injury and cuts anything else?
As for people who say Wlad gets hated on for demographic reasons, how do you explain that alot of people give Vitali more respect than Wlad? they are from the same demographic.
Its because there is such a disparity in skill with him and his opponents that he can just stay in long range and jab his opponents to death before finishing them after they've been tenderized enough. People seem to like Vitali more because although he's much more crude, he seems to risk a lot more in the ring with the aggressive style he fights with. Safety first styles never wins you fans even if its the best thing you could do.
