Prime Roy Jones vs Prime Joe Calzaghe @ 168!

Discussion in 'World Boxing Forum' started by imp4pdabest, Nov 9, 2008.

  1. Here's something I've been considering - what was a prime Jones' stamina like?

Now, I know - Prime Roy was christ reincarnated etc. etc.

I believe almost every one of Joe's opponents have been knackered by the championship rounds - because he's such a hard guy to deal with.

Now - Jones is a few steps higher than all of them - BUT would his stamina hold up under the assault Joe would put up - if so, it'd take a special performance from Joe.

If not - or if it's something that no one can be certain (I don't believe Jones was ever known for high output - and I dont think he can win on low-medium output with the pace Joe would try and set, he'd need to really amp his own workrate up compared to normal), then how would jones react in the later rounds? Would he decide to end it - and start swinging, bear in mind that this could mean he's already starting to tire and tiredness invites sloppy mistakes, prime joe had more pop (not much more - i still maintain he punches a lot harder than he looks to be, but it's still not power to ko opponents), and could really catch jones coming in if Joe is mentally focused to fight smart.

This is all supposition - a lot of "what ifs"

I'll also say this - during the run up to the kessler fight - someone made a thread - if you could give one peice of advise to each fighter - what would it be?

The answer for Kessler - that made me really think - "you must realise he wants to win more than you - and therefore you must NOT be afraid to lose"

Calzaghe's biggest fear is losing - I honestly don't think he could bear to lose - and it fuels him to up his game to so many levels to ensure that doesnt happen - he'd be willing to put everything on the line if it means he doesnt lose - I dont think Roy would.. maybe that bit of extra desire could play a part - it's unlikely, but it's made a difference before - Tyson/Douglas etc. etc. etc.

I honestly don't know who would win, because a prime joe didnt have the belief he has now - which is so important. I also believe his ability to adapt is something that has developed over his career - but post lacy (the confidence that gave him) it's sent him to unbelievable self confidence levels and he's so intouch, and so believes in himself - his adaptabilty has really shone through lately - soared through the roof.

Who would i want to win - Joe
Who do i think would win - couldnt tell you, but I'd put money on Joe - a) I'm a true fan and would back him to the end against anyone, and take any losses on the chin b) the odds if i won would be more in my favour :)

i feel calzaghes natural home is super middle his chin is better and if his hands wernt so crap he would KO jones, calzaghe would be too akward for jones , calzaghe by UD jones would have his ears boxed off by the aggressive counterpuncher not giving him any room to breath

Jones probably wins 7/10 or better. Very bad matchup for Calzaghe.

LoL. And you know Roy's mood, he loved to make you look bad while he looks good.

RJJ stops Cal late in a decent yet mostly one sided scrap. Love him or hate him, any knowledgeable boxing fan knows RJJ was at least one full notch above Cal in just about every aspect of the sport, prime for prime. *Waits for unreasonable Cal nuthuggers to chime in with utter nonsense* :nono

Can't believe JC got 80 votes at this point lol... mismatch. RJJ does whatever he wants and ends it if he feels like taking a chance on getting hit back.
