The thing that surprises me about this thread is that nobody has said anything about all these claims that JC had handspeed to rival Jones. He didn't. Not really even close, and he had nowhere near the power, nowhere near the footspeed, not nearly as elusive... exactly how is he going to win this fight?

You're talking about a very good fighter against an ATG. It's just not that tough to see the outcome.

    not as good as calzaghe's.

this is one area where calzaghe is without question, superior to roy in. but in the 12 round era there aren't many around calzaghe's weight class that can live with him when it comes to workrate and stamina.

Roy inside 5.....first bomb Roy lands will put Calzaghe to bed, just a far superior fighter in his prime

this shouldn't even be a question...

I dont know why anyone starts these prime 4 prime things with Roy Jones. No one matches him P4P

  5. It really isn't .. only on ESB (you know how that is:lol:). Joe's workrate would mean nothing as the issue is he would be completely unable to avoid getting hit. Roy was much quicker/faster with discernible power. Joe has never been able to avoid getting hit cleanly by right hands whether it was at 25 (Eubank) or 36 (Hopkins & Jones). Which is why he (and FW) was careful and reluctant to chase risk.

Lots of revisionists regarding the Calzaghe/Eubank fight but Joe struggled with Eubank (and he was past it). He caught right hands with his face and landed little of consequence after the first few rounds.

If (that version of) Eubank could catch him easily, Hopkins could make him look amateurish at 43, then prime Roy would have left him counting the stars without much trouble at all.

Not the first time he expressed as much, but in conversation with Jay Briggsy on 03/08/06 Eubank said:

"Listen, Calzaghe is easy to hit with right hands. He's busy enough, fast handed southpaw but he's abit European, quite square and rigid, you know? He's far from unhittable, infact he's easy to hit with the right (hand). Just a basic, straight right hand lead he doesn't seem to see, but of course, you have to have abit of speed and that's Jones.

"I also found him (Calzaghe) fairly easy to hit with body shots ....," added the lisping former champ.

I ain't voting in this cause too many variables take place.

    Here's why:

Sooooo RJJ KO's someone that was never ko'd in their career does he? I'll go further than that and say even when knocked down Joe wasn't even troubled, got up and went straight on the offensive again each time.

Calzaghe wins by wide UD does he? RJJ had a great defence in his prime and it's possible most of those shots glance off of RJJ, go straight into his defence or RJJ just moves and gets the hell out the way.

RJJ wins by wide UD does he? Calzaghe threw more punches than any of the larger champions, period. If this goes the distance RJJ would have his work cut out to outwork Calzaghe.

Calzaghe wins by KO does he? Calzaghe in his prime before the hand problems hand a good KO ratio, sure, but how's he going to hit a guy who isn't there to land the big shot? Flurries, sure, but KO a guy who also had never been KO'd in his prime? no.

So as you can see I'm having a hard time deciding.

If this question was asked back in 2003 and prior, I would readily bet my house that Jones wins. Back then, I really thought Jones was superman. He was untouchable and very rarely lost a round in a fight.

But after what has transpired 2004 and forward and seeing how good Calzaghe is, I say Jones beats Calzaghe but i am not willing to put any significant bet on it.

Joe Calzaghe is a true champion who always finds away to win, he has been winning consistantly for a quarter of a century, he has the x factor that true greats have, an inner belief ?
I once wrote that if Joe had a 10 foot put to win a golf major he would sink it, if he had a match point to win Wimbledon he would take it because he is a true champion that you can never ever bet against, talking of Wimbledon, tennis experts will tell you that Federer has a much better game than Nadal, better serve, better volley and better forehand yet Nadal beats him all the time, because Nadal has unbelievable mental strenght and belief.
Calzaghe is like Nadal and Jones Jnr like Federer, i would not have been a bit surprissed if Calzaghe had beaten Jones Jnr when both boxers were in their prime.
Jones Jnr had all the ability but Calzaghe had all the ring smarts and the capability to work any opponent out and beat them.

I'm going for a draw. Both were too good with their respective styles in their primes to say which one would win.

So I'm on the fence for this one.

i think you can use the first four rounds of there bout a while back, despite it being a heavier weight

JC was put on the floor early but never in danger
next three rounds were pretty close but i edged JC in two of them
    the other was a draw
    38-38

i believe JC would be working inside too much RJJ to put any power behind his punches.

pretty even until the 8th when jones tyres due to JC constant pressure and refusal to let him breath

JC by UD or SD but not without being wobbled a few times or even floored in a great battle
