He is just one superstar out of a few in boxing. The main public does not follow boxing anymore, so the ones who order the fights know the smaller fights as well as the bigger title fights. I doubt it makes much of a difference really. One fighter does not affect boxing much. What we need in boxing are young guys who are the future Calzaghes or Hearns or Leonards. And we do not have that anymore. Where are the great guys who are young or possibly great now?
calzaghe`s last 2 fights in the uk took place at 3 am in the morning and attracted 85,000 fans. yes calzaghe talks out his arse, but he had a great fanbase and was popular. from memory calzaghe was talking about american boxing and not british boxing`s popularity though.
cant see american missing him though can you? i think wales will miss him but boxing on a whole wont IMO i liked him, and loved watching him from lacy onwards, but he did talk alot of ****. and because he retire's he decides to say boxing is dying??? britain alone has alot of big fight's this year, one being hatton vs pac man, sure that will do alot better in ppv than 85,000 and ill put my bottom last dolla on it. Plus haye vs wlad i hope will do better, and thats just this year!
Even Calzaghe's fans don't miss him. Usually when a really popular boxer retires, they'res a whole bunch of crying and pleading for him to stick around. Look at Tyson, some people still want him back. But there's wasn't any "Stay with us Joe, boxing won't be the same without you!" That really tells you how much people loved his amateur boxing win-on-points style that he used for the last few years of his career. They didn't care for it at all. Brits like him because he had two attributes: he was British and he was good. Not because he was particularly exciting. But even they couldn't wait for him to get out of there, escaping like a theif in the night. The posts made on the days following his announcment were so filled with glee I was laughing my ass off. Definitely not people lamenting "the end of an era".

Can you only like fighters from your own Country or is that so stupid??? So, Calzaghe has retired. If your from Wales it doesn't mean that you can't like Chad Dawson for example. I'm English but theres no way I'd declare myself a Ricky Hatton fan. Yes he's exciting to watch and successful but it's not my type of fighter. I was supporting PBF over him and hope Manny does a number on him as well. I won't support a boxer because of an accident of birth...
