How Great was Ken Buchannan ?

I think Duran was improving all the time so I can't give Ken much of a chance in the rematch,but he should have had the opportunity.

 

i did think Ken in the first fight held back a bit in the first few rounds as he thought duran would egt tired

 

Duran has said at other times Dejesus,Hagler, Leonard and so on were his toughest opponents.

I would take the Buch thing with a pinch of salt.It seeme Duran had a differet answer for those kind of questions very time he was asked.

 

i havent saw the ishamatsu fight but i beleive it was fairly controversial scoring with some people claiming ken won

Ken was from Edinburgh? ****. I thought he was Glaswegian!!
He's just moved down my fave Scottish boxers. I now place him behind Watt and Clinton. Thats right I'm placing him bellow a guy from Croy!!

All seriousness, absolute brilliant lightweight. I was 6 when he retired but I remember the nights with my old man sitting in his chair listening to the radio swinging away at thin air. Only as an adult I've really paid attention to footage of the man.

Its very true. Its not the English people, its the English media. For instance when Andy Murray came out and lost a couple of matches earlier in his career i'll never forget watching the sports channell over here and them calling him Scottish - great, because he is.
But I just knew as soon as he became a success story they would claim him as Britains Andy Murray in tournaments and so on, and low and behold, they did. Its the way it always is with the press down there, and hence why a lot of Scots have a grudge against the English.:think

Anyway, its very sad that Ken is so underappreciated now, not by boxing purists but by the general British public. He is no where near as well off as he should be, and many joe averages in the street, even right HERE in Edinburgh, will guess at fighters like Barry McGuigan and Frank Bruno being greater fighters than Ken - I mean of course they are, they are on tv all the time:twisted:.

In a way it is unfortunate he is from here in Edinburgh and not Glasgow, because you best believe if he was a native of Scotland's biggest city, he would be one of Scotlands most famous sportsmen ever. And rightly so. People are very passive here in Edinburgh.

 

I thought Ken was going to be a great boxer in the 70' after watching him fight in MSG and the FELT FORUM a few times. I remember asking Nat Fleicher of Ring Magazine his thought and that was before the Duran fight and Nat said he is very good but not Great. Buchannan could box, he had good feet, decent hand speed and power and was gritty but when he met a Great fighter in Duran...the cream rose to the top

 

I was a fan of his, back then. I thought he was just a supurb boxer.
I was pissed at the blind ref and the low blow.

You do know that Duran never unified? He had enough years to have done so.

 

He did not but he was the lineal Champ and most felt Duran was head and shoulders over the rest but I agree dispite politics or money a true Champ should try and unify and that is one thing I have against Holmes and Bowe, they should have unified

 

I think the Sweaties grudge against us English goes a bit deeper than that!

Yes I have an Indian friend,when Panesar does well he is British ,until he flops.Murray is the best male player from the UK,in my lifetime [60years],but I consider him Scottish ,as I am sure he does .I read somewhere he doesnt care too much for the patronization he gets from us ,can't say as I blame him.

He beat some very good fighters and Duran said he was his toughest opponent. He should have gotten a better deal when Duran hit him low--at least time to recover.
