Instead of Norton in 78', lets say Holmes goes against a motivated and in shape Jimmy Young, a carbon copy of the same Young that fought Norton in 77.

    Thoughts?

Larry Holmes schools Jim Young in a stinky but tactical fight...... Larry Holmes was the BEST heavyweight in the world from 1978 thru 1983 with ease..... Larry Holmes is bigger, taller, and more powerful then Jim Young was..... Sure, Young had good skills; so he'd last the 10, 12, or 15 rds with Holmes, but he'd lose nonetheless...... Peace....

It amazes me how Jimmy Young obtained so many fans from the late 70s and early 80s..... Young was NEVER really in a thrilling fight, except, for his '77 fight with George Foreman.... Other than that, I was turned off by Jimmy Young in the ring.... Cheerio....

Young was clever in a defensive way but too negative,I saw him make a fool out of John L Gardner at Wembley ,but he wouldn't do that to Holmes, Larry was better at just about every facet of the game than Young. He couldn't outbox Larry ,and as sure as eggs is eggs he aint dropping him.

Another Berbick style win for Holmes.

He had trouble gettting these slicksters out of there did Larry.

Larry "The Homer" Holmes lived by the rule: "You gotta get them drunk before you can mug them." Well, a slippery dude like Jimmy Young would never oblige Larry Holmes in a real all out fight....... Jimmy Young was WAY too defensive minded.... Larry Holmes stalks Young all over the ring and picks at him at will, the fight goes the distance with Holmes winning by a wide margin........ The Holmes of '78 has an easy time against the feather-fisted Jim Young....... Cheers.....

holmes did everything better and was more aggressive. Young goes the distance, winning maybe 4 or five rounds.

Larry and Jimmy used to spar, I'd like to see how those sessions went. In the fight, I'd take Larry by clear ud.

Its interesting that you mention this one Russell, and in fact, I thought about the same scenario many years ago. Somehow, these two fighters managed to pass each other like two ships in the night whithout ever meeting. Personally, I would have rather seen Holmes fight Young in 1979 instead of Ossie " ****ing " Ocasio, but sometimes thats the way the cookie crumbles.

Anyway, who do I think would win? Difficult to say. Some feel that Young's loss to an aging Muhammad Ali was a robbery, and while I have never seen this fight, there are many who have claimed that it was a very close and difficult fight to judge. That being said, if a past prime Ali can battle Young to an indecisive verdict, then Holmes has to be favored here. I think most would agree that Larry was the better boxer of the two anyway, and besides Young wasn't able to seal the deal in victory on two ocassions against Ossie " ****ing " ocasio. Even though I don't particularly like making comparisons about different results with common opponents, Those fights shouldn't be ignored either..

I go with Holmes by a somewhat close, yet comfortable decision.

Young gave Ali a lot of trouble, I think he may have beat him but did not get the decision. Holmes had a more powerfull jab than Ali, not as fast but harder but Young was hard to hit and I also think the Norton fight was another fight Jimmy may have won but it was close. Young had no real power but was a heavy and had fast hands( he dropped Foreman) so he did have some pop ( not enough to stop Norton but neither did Ali or Holmes) Its a toss-up fight ....Norton/Holmes was a SD...Young tricky enough to catch Holmes dropping the left and shoot the right hand plus had the angles that M.Spinks gave Holmes.....SD...who wins

I take Holmes here by a UD. When Young dropped Foreman it was in the 12th and final round. Foreman didn't have anything left in his tank.

Young was cutie. A safety first fighter. He could make anyone look bad. A tad quicker overall with his hands and feet, Larry would have a problem finding him. Holmes, a better boxer, would be patient, using his Jab to guage distance and waiting to throw the right hand. This fight would be a boring affair. Holmes pursuing and Young retreating, with Young counter punching at times but not doing enough. Holmes 15rd.UD.

Bottom Line: Larry Holmes was great; James Young was NOT!

Young/Norton was a damned good fight. Feel free to pop it in sometime when you get a copy of it.
