Who's the best fighter/boxer you've ever met? For me, it almost pains me to say it because he's such a dick, but it's Pernell Whitaker.
So Sweet Pea is a dick for real? Like..was he a dick to you? haha How about Larry Holmes, you told me hes pretty standup.
Pernell was blowing everyone but the white girls in their 20's off. I wanted his autograph, so I held up the book and pen, and he brushed me aside. On his way back, I was annoyed, so I was more blatant and stood in the way, he looked me dead in the eye, put his hand on my shoulder and said "I'll be right back, buddy." I proceeded to see him drive off and that's the last I ever saw of him. Larry is the type of person where you either like him or you don't. He's much nicer when the press isn't around. He gives fighters, even guys like Mike Tyson, a lot of credit when the press isn't around. One day I went to his restaurant and he recognized me, so he got up mid conversation, shook my hand, and introduced me to his youngest daughter and her fiance. He also gave me free BBQ wings. He didn't have to do that, he could have kept talking and ignored I was there.
John "Super D" Duplesis. I was thinking of working out at the same gym as he did in New Orleans in the early 90's & spoke to him briefly. He became a top five(#4 ?) jr welterweight contender before he was stopped by Julio Ceaser Chavez in 4 rounds. Undercard of Tyson /Ruddock I
Tyson was cool but he always had a huge entourage and not much time. Ran into him twice pre-Ruddock II. In a more bizarre case, Ali ended up alone and a little disoriented in the parking lot of where I worked in Seattle, also early 90's. He was... well, he was ****ing Muhammad Ali, bigger than life. I damn near **** myself once my boss told me who was outside. On a more obscure note, John David Jackson seemed uniquely surprised I recognized him, even though he was wearing a t-shirt that said "John David Jackson - Middleweight World Champion".
I've been going to his gym the past 3 years, and he's in there most weeks, and he talks to people quite a bit, so obviously over the course of 3 years he knows who I am (not by name though).
