Bob Foster.... would the cruiserweights had been too much for him?

People are going a bit overboard about Foster's resilience here I think. So he couldn't cut it versus the top heavyweights, that doesn't mean he couldn't have dominated a division as weak as cruiser has invariably been. OK, Holyfield would've beaten him, but who else? I'd definitely back Foster to beat Qawi, and Moorer in a fight at 190. Who else has there ever been at cruiser? Haye? Toney? Jirov? Al Cole? Orlin Norris? Come on, Foster would sharpshoot all of these guys. I think Michael Spinks would beat him above 175 though.

I can't ever see Foster beating James Toney at 190 pounds or heavier........

Like Ali, Frazier, Folley and Terrell? Jones is the only one who beat him that would have been

fraziers best weight was around 200 pounds. same with ali.

but they would of been a lot heavier if they used the training methods and *performance enhancing supllements* that todays haeavies use

Clay was solid at 210 for Liston in in 1964, and Ali weighed 206 for the '65 rematch.... However, them weights were short-lived for Clay / Ali....... By '66 and '67, Ali was settling in around 212 pounds of solid muscle.....

A young Joe Frazier could make 204 to 206 pounds, however, once champion in 1970, Frazier was looking pretty good between 209 to 211 pounds....... People can say what they want to, but Frazier was not a slob at 215 for George Foreman in 1973...... Frazier had thick thighs......

I agree, I cant imagine that either would have been at their bests at 200lbs. Both had good output and stamina at those respective weights too.

That depends on 2 things; how well his chin would hold up at that weight and whether or not he could carry his power there. He definitely had the height and skills to deal with them but for some fighters 10-15 pounds could make a big difference.

It sure as hell did for Foster............ Foster claimed he had to stuff himself like a pig 3 X a day just to puff up to 185 pounds........ That tells me he was a natural at 175 pounds..... Yes, Ol' Bob was tall at 6' 3" in height, but his bone structure was NOT that of a heavyweight..... I'm pretty goddamn sure that Foster would still bang pretty hard at 190 to 200 pounds, however, his chin would fail him there.... Cheers.....:bbb

As far as heavyweight champions of the past are / were concerned for Bob Foster...... Well, in a time machine, I can see / envision Foster hanging tuff with the likes of Gene Tunney, Jimmy Braddock, Ezzard Charles & Floyd Patterson....... However, not too many other prior champs at 190 to 210 pounds.......... Laugh all you want, but the '78 version of Leon Spinks would more-than-likely chase Foster out of the ring for a late round stoppage......... Spinks was green in 1978, but also rock solid in muscle between 197 to 202 pounds for his two fights with a faded Ali........... Cheers.....

He also lost to lesser heavyweights like Doug Jones and Zora Folley. Who by today's standards would've/could've been cruiserweights. I don't necessarily think Foster would've gotten his brains bashed in at cruiserweight, but as someone else said.. Foster as natural of a LHW as you'd find, and he'd always have trouble against guys physically bigger than him.

And I think Foster would've had trouble with most those names you'd mentioned.

    This is the bottom line.

The fact is that Joe Frazier could easily have made the cruiserweight limit today and possibly the old cruiserweight limit.

I dont think Joe would have been as good as a cruiser as he was as a heavy. He trained his ass off and was still 205-210 at his best. Even if he did get down to 200 hed possibly be the best cruiser ever, he decimated quality heavyweights so to bag Foster coz he got stopped by three heavyweight champs is a bit tough in my opinion.

My question is barring Holy, name the guys who campaigned as cruisers that you (anyone) think are better and beat Foster. Ali 220, Frazier 210 Terrel 205 were well over the cruiser limit when they fought 180-190lb Foster.

Frazier could have dehydrated himself to come into the weigh in at 199 lbs then come into the fight at 205 lbs.

    It would be easy.

It is not unthinkable that Frazier could make 190 at the weigh in or that Ali and Terell could come in at under 200.

Similar things are being done today.

My question is barring Holy, name the guys who campaigned as cruisers that you (anyone) think are better and beat Foster. [/quote]

I dont think that Doug Jones was better than Foster but he still beat him.

I think that a lot of cruisers could have potentialy beaten him.
