Really?! Whitaker never got hit with a left hook? You did say that didn't you? You highlighted it too didn't you? 'EVER' He isn't a fighter, he must be a god. Have you ever actually seen him fight? Check out his fight with Julio Cesar Vasquez. He gets hit with lots of hooks over 12 rounds. Or check out the 6th round against Hurtado, going down by a...let's see...a left! Or check out the 10th round against Alfredo Layne. A sweet left hook to the temple puts him down again. And by the way, it was ruled a slip. A perfect left hook and ruled a slip. Anyways, I'm not going to get into name calling for someone's view. I've posted that I feel Cuevas would be stopping Whitaker late and my feelings why. I enjoy discourse not this 'borderline ******ed' statements. Scartissue
And remember Cuevas only has to land once and it could be over. And over 15 rounds I don't see Whittaker not getting hit at all.Bad style up match-up for Whittaker.Cuevas is vastly underrated.
they were pretty good with diversified talents. Cuevas himself was not the most skilled, but like Julian Jackson, he carried the GREAT EQUALIZER
I would go with pernell but I wouldn't bet my house on it. He's the far superior boxer but when someone punches as hard as cuevas did, anything is possible.
Cuevas might have been a slightly better one shot puncher than Trinidad but I disagree his shots came in quicker than Tito's. Cuevas was a welterweight version of Jose Luis Ramirez with a better punch. He was SLOW. I don't think Cuevas has ever beat anyone near the level of Whitaker, even if he was less than stellar as a welterweight. I'm not talking about the past prime version that fought Rivera or Hurtado, I'm talking about the version that fought McGirt and Chavez. THAT version, is a class beyond anyone Cuevas ever beat. When you consider that Cuevas beat past prime versions of Backus and Gray, pretty much the best fighters you're left with that he beat are Weston, Shields, Ranzany and Espada. 3 of those 4 were able to go into the later rounds with Pipino and they are not Pernell Whitaker level fighters.
Sweet, great points all round. I love discussing a fantasy bout when actual opinionated knowledge is employed. Y'know, when Cuevas came along at the time I totally thought he was a fluke and was undeserving of a title shot. I picked Gray and Espada (the rematch) to beat him, which is how talented I think they were, only to see them fall. I saw Ranzany and Weston try to box him and end up fighting desperately to keep him off of them, such was the pressure. I really don't see a welterweight version of Whitaker surviving against Cuevas but you do and I love the points you brought up. So, we'll agree to disagree. Interesting matchup. Scartissue
The left hook is actually a very good punch to use on a southpaw....they are blind to it by their own stance. Plus you can never back up against the leftie....and Cuevas wouldn't do that. But Pea is hard to catch. I think Cuevas must hurt him in the first 5 rounds....otherwise he gets outboxed.
Funny, I thought the Left hook was a pretty effective weapon for McGirt in thier first fight before his shoulder went out.
The funny thing is that he says 'remember Pea didn't have a great jaw'. Probably one of the best chins in history, for those who landed on it never wobbled Pea. Not saying Cuevas wouldn't land, but Pea would seriously outbox him all night. Seriously. Pea wasn't a great Welterweight by any means, but it would take a 'great' Welterweight to beat him H2H. Even the likes of Leonard and Hearns would have fits with Pea before winning decisions or possible stoppages. Cuevas is a solid B-level WW (not fighter, but WW) I.e this far Robinson, Leonard, Hearns, Duran, Gavilan etc etc are A-Class Welterweights. Pea is an anomaly. One of the greatest fighters at a weight he didn't really belong at, but he proved he could fight even further on at 154. The 'peak' WW Sweet Pea (if you can call it that) was against Chavez, himself nowhere near a 147 lb fighter. But Pea on that night, had enough speed, shot variety, elusiveness etc etc to beat any version of Cuevas.
