Listen to him slur his words and struggle to put his thoughts together. Watch the host's expression, it's a look of tragedy and pity. Vargas babbles on like a guy who's never been on TV before, his thoughts don't flow in a logical sequence or even stay on topic. http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2009/feb/14/mma-boxing-worlds-collide-west-coast-fighters/ IMO James Toney is just a big guy that talks in a unique way, he does not sound damaged, maybe slightly punchy. As a guy that gained about 70lbs in less than two years, take it from me that you're voice pattern changes as you get heavier, it's slower, takes longer to express and requires heavier breathing. But Vargas isn't talking like a fat guy, he's talking like a drunk.
Holy ****. Vargas is totally ****ed in that video. He should not fight again. Look at that video and the one in the Mosley press-conference. Night and day.
ps listen to him describe MMA. He ignorantly calls it legalized street fighter, and PRAISES it for that, it makes himself sound like a petty gangster in the process. How embarrassing a spectacle. I don't mean to be offensive, but he's making Mexicans look bad here, and perpetuating some bad stereotypes.
Vargas has never been an articulate guy, but i'd not go so far as to say he sounds punchy at all. He doesn't sound anything like a riddick bowe or meldrick taylor who clearly are punch drunk.
He doesn't sound great and a bit confused or slow minded (like an old person), but not as bad as Toney. His interview after the second Peter fight was really sad. Still, i'd like to see more of Vargas before assessing this. Maybe he was really tired or even on coke or whatever.
He has always been a punk. Yes, he showed heart in a few of his fights but personality wise, he has always been a punk wannabee gangster type. Like the time he got his ass handed to him in a street fight over some woman and then had to call in 3-4 of his homies AND use a golf club for revenge. I honestly have a hard time feeling sorry for him.
So how did Kimbo Slice and Tank Abbott make it to the pros? You probably dont want to know what most people think about MMA here at ESB
Abbott and Slice are at the bottom of the barrel in the MMA world. They're popular b/c they're exciting, but to class a true world-level athlete and martial artist like Penn or Silva a street fighter is total hogwash. It's like an anti-boxing fan saying boxing is just bar fighting after watching fights like Villa-Mtwaga. Maybe Vargas went to gyms and picked up the worst MMA guys he can find and they are in fact street fighters, it's not beneath him.
He's not punch drunk, he's just has so many rolls of fat under his chin he has trouble talking fluently.
He's not punch drunk, he just sounds fat and tired. The words are still intelligible and he's producing the words he wants to use. Listen to a Tommy Hearns interview and squirm as the host has to finish his sentences for him - that's punch drunk.
