    Hi,

I'm 20 years old and just started boxing a couple weeks ago when a friend gave me his old heavy bag for free. Its around 80 or 100 lbs. Anyways, I've been working it and following a 7 round routine while practicing my technique. I figured I should get some spar time to really see how it feels in a fight.

I sparred my a friend who has been boxing for a couple years now, and basically I had my guard down while throwing my jab and got absolutely blown by a left hook to the cheek/jaw.

I was shaken for about a second, and then an intense pain came into my jaw and I basically could not move it. I pressed on but stopped, the pain was so bad I felt that if I got hit again I might get my cheekbone shattered lol....

That was a couple weeks ago, and it took me about a week before I could eat without any pain. Basically, is this type of hit normal? Do you guys take such hits and continue the round?

    Thanks.

ha well sounds like u got rocked alright.

Maybe your friend went a little hard on you too. If he is well-trained a few years can make a big diff. over a few weeks. Take your time learning technique before jumping right in there, no rush...and try to be matched fair when doing so.

But yea...it happens. No shame in stopping.

Just stick to it...ya might even end up a bonafide flatnose one day. :)

I didn't have my 1st spar for at least 3 months after training. Its counter productive to get yourself hurt without learning basic fundamentals.Boxing and martial arts in general,is about growing and getting to know yourself.A spar should never cause you to get "rocked" and is only intended to simulate a fight with little intent to hurt your opponent.

Best advice is to join a gym.

If its not accessible. Then try instructional videos on the net and shadow box more
and punching the bag less. The punching bag deludes ppl to believing they only need power or that they have enough power to already ko someone.

What you felt is your jaw, there are bones in there that can break. If you don't know how to defend yourself you had no business sparring. Your friend is an *******, sorry for being rude. I have taken perhaps two or three such hits over the past few years, tucking your chin prevents it for the most part. I did finish the round because I didn't feel anything until after I took out my mouthpiece. Were you wearing a mouthpiece and headgear?

dude the best advise i can give you is if you want to learn boxing, find a good trainer. There is no way you can teach yourself proper technique if you have never boxed before. Your trainer can watch you and correct your mistakes. If your making mistakes by your self no one is there to correct it and you could form bad habits with your technique. Hitting the bag is good for training but you need someone to teach you the science mate.
    All the best..

Yeah thats boxing for you. It takes experience to be able to get hit with something like that and dig down to keep going. If you stick with it you'll find its easier to take shots then when you first started out. A word of advice for you, don't think about getting hit. Don't think about it hurting you and don't think about the other guy landing on you at all, even after getting hit don't think about the pain just think about what you did wrong. And if it does hurt that can be good for you because i guarentee you you wont want to get hit with it again. So in not wanting to get hit your going to keep your right hand up next time and youll catch that left hook on the glove. Stick with it with the right mindset and youll be busting up your friend in no time.

your friend has been boxing for a couple of years and you try to spar him after a couple of weeks? haha he knew what he was doing my friend. prolly just wanted something to beat on.

but really though. a couple months makes a huge difference over a couple of weeks yet alone a couple of years.

youll be all right. rub some dirt in it and if it starts changing color or still hurts within the next two weeks go get it x-rayed just to make sure its not fractured or broken.

I was training yesterday and i thought i was RJJ so i put my hand down and i was going to catch my opponent with a left hook, unfortunately he kicked me in the face, my lip was cut and my face hurts today, and i still cant drink a hot drink.

The bottom line with boxing or muay thai is you are going to take big shots, and they are going to hurt, you asked the question is this pain normal..... simple answer... yes it is, but you have to just get on with it, its only temporary.

Thanks for all the replies, no RDJ I was not wearing headgear/mouthpiece. I can see that might make me look like a moron when sparring some guy with experience.

I live in the country so its tough to find a gym close by, but I think I might have found an old timer that used to coach back in the day so I'm pretty excited.

    Thanks for all the advice/info.

head gear or a mouthguard is absolutly vital if you are sparring...light sparrign ok there is a difference but if you are having a solid sparrign session as it sounds you better get your gear on.

by the way taking a hook from a trained boxer, with little tech skills and your first sparrign session....without a mouthpiece:patsch by god your jaw is gonna hurt. anyways if anythign it sounds like you can have confidence in your chin.

Without a mouthpiece that will hurt and possibly break your jaw. You're lucky he didn't land an uppercut, you could be missing half your tongue.

Sounds like your mouth may have been open. Same thing happened to me. I got clipped by a pretty light shot but my mouth was open and the pain was just like u described. If your chin gets hit with your mouth open it moves more than when closed, which causes the pain to come at the joint under your ear. Ive kept my mouth shut and my mouthgaurd in ever since and its never happened again.

Some guy with experience???? He knew what he was doing, yet he threw full shots at you whilst knowing + not advising you to wear any protective gear. Do you have a gun? Go and shoot the *******.

I guess there's no such thing as a free punch bag afterall.

Its way too early for it to mean anything plus its questionable as to whether you were ready to spar or even brace yourself for a hook.

Keep training hard and sparring. You'll be fine.
