Winky knows that this is sort of a last-ditch effort for him to remain viable in the sport. He can't afford another layoff like the one he has been on so I fully expect him to be the best he can possibly be and give Williams hell. Williams is gonna be taken into deep waters in this fight, people.
It doesn't work like that. Williams has snappy punches, and in his one fight at 160 thus far showed increased power (less weight drained) albeit against an overmatched opponent. Winky is not what he used to be. I don't think he will be stopped myself, but I think Williams will hit nothing but gloves for 12 rounds and win a decision on aggression. The only fighters Winky has ever schooled have been shorter fighters. He won't have the advantage of popping his jab at Williams like he did against Mosley and Tito. Winky doesn't have the power to gain the respect of Williams. Winky is a good technician, but Williams is in his prime, wants to prove he belongs with the 'Elite' and I think he will win a wide decision.
I'm thinking maybe Paul Williams wins based purely on work rate, that he'll catch the judges eye even if most of his shots land on the gloves and arms. However, linking to what you said about Hopkins-Pavlik, a lot thought Pavlik would overwhelm Hopkins with his punch output and either outwork him to a decision or where him down to stoppage, like most are predicting here in the favour of Paul Williams. Sure Winky isn't as active as Hopkins was, but like Hopkins-Pavlik this fight is at HIS weight, sure Williams has fought there but there's no doubt he's not going to be as comfortable at 160 as at 147. I'm thinking Winky pulls it out the bag and wins a closeish but comfortable decision, like 116-112.
Good point Tommy, but I think Hopkins is superior to Wright and Williams is superior to Pavlik. That will prevent a 'schooling' (although with you're 116-112 prediction I'm not saying you yourself predicted a one-sided blowout)
I agree Hopkins is superior to Winky, not sure about Williams being superior to Pavlik though, maybe a little bit better. I'm absolutely certain that if the old Winky Wright turns up, he wins though. No doubt at all. If he can cover up and prevent Williams landing, get in range to fire double up on the jab and then move out of range again, he can do it all night and take a decision. Although very different styles, remember the last time Winky fought a welterweight moving up to middle, Felix Trinidad.
Again, good points, but Winky had the size advantage over Trinidad (as he did with Mosley at 154) He won't have that with Williams, and if he has lost one iota of handspeed he will find it much harder to get his jab off.
Absolutely. The main factor here is Williams' southpaw stance in my opinion. If he was orthodox, even though he's taller with a reach advantage, Winky would be able to jab over the top of the left hand jab, that's not going to happen now. That coupled with the height and volume punching means Winky's hand speed is going to be pretty crucial aswell, he needs to beat Williams to the punch, because he's always going to be in range and needs to keep his guard up at all times, fighting off the back foot and then step in with the double guard and move.
Another thing that could work in Winky's favour is that Williams doesn't always use his height and reach to full advantage.
Absolutely, but regardless Winky's still always going to be within punching range, Williams apparently has 10" inches on him in reach, though I think it's probably more around 6 or 7. He just needs to keep his left hand up, elbows tucked and keep his shoulder tight when he's jabbing. If he does that as normal, Williams is going to be landing on the gloves and arms and then Winky can land the jab at will and then move out of range. To win the fight though he needs the right judges. Williams is going to outland him, he just needs judges that aren't going to be swayed be aggressiveness and punching that are landings on gloves and arms. EDIT: Btw, went on 606 yesterday for a laugh and saw some people's top 10 P4P lists of all-time. Nearly pissed myself.
Williams has serious height and reach on Wright. He is going to box him and not let him implement his strength and power advantage. Williams should carry the weight fine. The thing with Williams is he can let his hands go all night long. Wright is really going to have to cut off the ring, work the body, work OFF the jab or he'll be found wanting. Wright will want to expose Williams balance and defence issues. It's a 50-50 fight.
The difference is Pavlik is slow as hell and predictable, two different matchups. Williams is faster than Winky, bigger, and hits harder. Of course I'm not going to count those equations as automatic win for Williams because styles make fights. And Winky is no Bernard Hopkins.
The weight wasn't the real problem for Pavlik in the Hopkins fight. Its the fact that other than Hopkins. Pavlik had never fought a slick defensive boxer before. All the fights he had before Hopkins were tailor made for his style. Williams has experience with defensive fighters in the Quintana fight and Verno Phillips. I say this fight will mirror the Pacquiao/DeLaHoya fight more than Pavlik Hopkins.
