Personally, I'm not too impressed. In boxing, in my own personal experience, and from what I've seen done by professionals, aside from intelligence, speed is the most important aspect you can have in the ring. And despite what people are saying, Paul Williams does not have it. I mean, he has above average handspeed, but it's definitely not elite level, nor is it even on par with maybe even a guy like Cotto. I think Paul Williams greatest performance was against Margarito where to me, while most of his punches were hitting Margarito's gloves, still managed to put on a boxing lesson. Still though, nothing he threw hurt Margarito, and time and time again, it's been shown that Margarito can be outboxed for long portions of the fight. Anyway, I'll start off with Paul William's strengths. He's tall at 6'2'', rangy and he is a good body puncher and when he puts his body into his punches, he appears to have reasonable power. His stamina is out of control, he's shown a lot of heart, and appears to have a decent chin. He's also shown an alright ability to slip punches when he's fighting from the outside. His weaknesses are that as I mentioned before, he's not a FAST fighter, he often gives up his height. He gets hit too much with flush punches, especially for somebody with his build. And I don't think he has elite power either. Ya'll have the right to disagree of course, but I just don't see much special about him. I mean, it's good that he got a win against Verno Phillips, but really aside from him and Margarito, who has he fought? And really, Verno Phillips isn't that good anyway. So what kind of chances do you give him against Vernon Forrest who is slicker and faster, James Kirkland who has serious KO power, and Angulo who is like a bigger version of Margarito?
Why are you worried about Angulo or Kirkland? How about Santos or Dzinziruk, they are the beltholders and main men along with Forrest. You touched upon speed and intelligence. But I actually think his speed is pretty good, not out of this world, but its good all the same. It's his intelligence. He's not a smart fighter at all. Against Quintana, he fell for the Puerto Rican's trick EVERY round. For 12 whole rounds. A quick KO in the rematch hasn't erased my doubts against slick boxers and counterpunchers. Can he adjust mid-fight? Anyway, he's good. We've really just gotta wait and see how good.
I think at 154 Santos would beat him and at even odds I wouldn't bet on PW to beat Dzinziruk. However i believe PW beats Martinez edit. I see TFFP just brough Santos and Dzinz up which imo are the real guys to beat at 154
I think it's good that he goes to the body, but after he throws a combination, he needs to get outside. He has a tendency to just stand there and trade giving up what may be his best asset in his height and reach. The reason I brought up Kirkland is because the guy can really punch, and if Paul Williams fights Kirkland like he did Phillips, he might find himself on the canvass. Angulo was brought up because I think he's similiar to Margarito, but bigger and stronger.
i liked the way he looked, but winky's a whole different ball game, hopefully he can adjust and use a lot of angles to break that guard...
Williams by far... even if he wins it'll be against a faded ,old WW...IF... btw, he forgot to mention the schooling PW received by CQ, who I think would probably do the same in a rubbermatch.
Williams is a very good fighter. The guy seems to improve in every fight. The Wright fight will be a big test for him. The guy can punch, he can take a punch, he has good speed, he can fight off the jab, he works the body, and he can fight on the inside. There's no one at 154 that he doesn't have the ability to beat.
U hit right on the nail. Paul is one of the most over-rated fighters around. Agree with everything u said, except the part where u said Paul doesn't have good handspeed. Did u see the Quintana fight? Pretty impressive.
Spot on. :good Williams is a handful for anyone at 154. He'll get his props after a close win over Winky.
Yeah, Quintana seemed to have no problem dodging his punches in the first fight. Compared to people I've seen who do have speed, he looks slow in comparison. Maybe a 7 out of 10 on the speed chart.
7 out of 10 is pretty good. Williams is by no means a slow fighter. The guy has pretty good handspeed.
