Could anyone who ever fought at 130-140 have stopped Chavez?

Hmm... Chavez is one of my favorites and a fighter I admired a lot growing up, but let me see what I can do with this one.

In my opinion, probably the single best weapon to use against Chavez is a laser like straight right. Coming in, Chavez sometimes carried his left lower than he should, especially when focused on the body. This means he can potentially be vulnerable to a hard fast straight right coming over his left while he's looking to go downstairs or to use as a left hook to the head while coming forward. And indeed, it's worth noting that the only two times he was down in his career, (Randall, Tszyu) it was a hard straight right that did it while he was coming in.

Therefore, even though both of those fights were well outside of his prime that's a potential vulnerability. The two fighters I see who have the best potential to use that specific tool are Arguello and Tszyu himself.

Other possibilities: Duran might do it at the end of a brutal war of attrition in a 15 rounder, but I wouldn't want to bet on it. Chavez had excellent stamina as well as punch resistance and while I think Duran would win, I don't think he could knock Chavez out unless it got to a point where Chavez was so tired he was ready to fall over by himself, and I have a VERY hard time imagining that happening. Unless by that point they're both so beaten up that there's just nothing left in one or both guys.

Ike Williams seemed to have a style that would suit him well, very busy, very strong, good straight punching, but I haven't seen enough film on him, (to be honest about all I've seen is the fight with Beau Jack) to be able to comment.

Pryor I just can't imagine doing enough accumulation damage to pull it off. Maybe as an outside chance, but I can't see it.

De La Hoya's style and physical gifts could give Chavez trouble, but KO a prime Chavez? Not a chance in hell.

Mosley I can't see, but he does have quite impressive power for starting at lightweight and speed to give Chavez a lot of trouble. I'd put this one down as highly unlikely for a KO, (although it's very possible that Mosley's combination of speed and power might give him an edge in a decision) but anything can happen.

One other name I haven't seen discussed that might do it via accumulation, particularly in a wild 15 rounder is good old Hammering Hank Armstrong. A lot of pressure, a high octane pace, tough as nails, heavy handed, as tough as they come on the inside. Could wear Chavez down, although again, I view it as fairly unlikely. Maybe in the middle of the possibilities.

So my list goes like this. Highest possibilities:
Arguello: Laser accurate and precise shots, including a lethal straight right that Chavez has a small weakness towards. Great counterpuncher, great timing, might do progressive damage as the fight went on and get a late stoppage. (Although I think Chavez might get to him first in a fight).
Tsyzu: Only because he has a similar lethal straight right, a good style and is a naturally larger man.
Duran: A possible accumulation stoppage after a protracted inside war. Unlikely, but possible, and Duran seemed to take the idea of someone going 15 with him personally so you know he'd go all out to get it.

Unlikely, but hey, anything is possible:

. Chavez was not a smaller version of Margarito, he utilized head movement, and had a lot more variety to his offense. He does not get stopped by Mosley, or any other fighter you mentioned.

Mosley and Pryor would have the best shot, but I don't think its possible.

 

That was a peach of a right hand that Frankie Randall landed.....right on the button.....it could'nt have landed any more perfect and Chavez survived it.

I dont believe a prime Chavez gets taken out by anyone, but like a few here have expressed, Arguello would probably have the best chance.

Arguello operated in varied intensity and he could make an opponent feel like what was in front of him was a fighter that was losing steam in his punches.....then all of a sudden, WHACK....an explosive shot out of nowhere.

I dont think Arguello stops Chavez, but he has the skillset and mindset to come closest.

His poison is a slick defensive counter-puncher or a tall lanky fighter with a good jab. ....., but he is actually talking about 135, not 147 and 154 were his style changed from135.

Williams is about the best choice I can think of. Faster and more explosive than Arguello, and an even better finisher at LW. Fighters that came to him were generally toast because of his firepower and ability to explode, hurt an opponent with well placed shots, and finish.
