What are your thoughts on the guy. Here in Britain I feel he is vastly underated and deserves more credit. But what do you guys think ?
just watched his fight against curry last night wat an awesome performance none of the yanks gave him a chance and he pounded that boy like i pound latin ***** = very ****ing hard
Even after the fight. The commentators were saying..... If it wasn't for the butt, blah, blah, blah..... Sore losers
i know yeah the butt actually saved curry from a serious beating that wouldve shorten'd his career honey was a beast in his day and as you said is terrible underrated on this forum.
he had some good defences too...i remember one where he ran across the ring at the bell to start a round and decked the opponent...and another defense was something like 30 seconds. he was even good at british level years later at light-middle.
I thought he was a very good fighter, but not an all time great. He beat Curry when Donald was having weight trouble, but it was a nice win. He did knockout Hatcher quickly and had some good wins but to be ATG or HOF he should have lasted a little longer and beat more guys in the fashion he beat Donald. But the way he was outclassed against Starling showed a lot. I think Donald Curry's career was greater than Honeyghan.
Butts were Don Currys big achilles heel, if you listen to the rumours.... As for Honeyghan always loved him as a fighter, his problem was he was too reckless which is what got him destroyed against Starling who lets face it wasn't that great. Similar to Benn getting schooled by Watson, only Honeyghan didn't learn from it like Benn did. He's a proper fat ******* these days though, saw him interviewed before the Hatton/Mayweather fight and he's unrecognisable now, probably 230lbs at least.
Honeygan was very effective when he mixed his fiery aggression with some movement and footwork - as he did against Curry, to great effect. Unfortunately, he didn't always do that, and we saw the results of that against Vaca and Starling. He probably doesn't get as much credit as he should for his title defenses, in which he scored quick KOs over Bumphus and Hatcher, and also beat Blocker, which looks better in retrospect after Blocker beat Starling. To me, he was roughly as good a champion as Curry had been. Still his limitations were badly exposed by Starling and Breland, neither of whom were all that special themselves, and after that I don't remember a damn thing from him. Surprised to hear he's underrated in Britain, I would've thought he'd still be receiving a lot of acclaim there.
He was a fantastic welterweight,sharp, accurate and crisp puncher,thats why he demolished Gianfranco Rossi in Italy in 3 rds then went on to do a wrecking job of Don Curry aswell.It was a time in Britain in the 80`s where all we really had was Honeyghan and Barry McGuigan and America had all the big boxing stars.Lloyd Honeyghan always a legend.
