It was the fact that if you use excessive gauze and add water (or even sweat during a fight will do it), it hardens.

You can have illegal wraps even if you are using totally legal materials to do the wrapping. There are things you can and can't do during hand wrapping.

 

It IS gauze. It was still illegal, otherwise they wouldn't have had to rewrap.
