Yes he is.I just rewatched Lopez vs Mitchell 1 and I still think Mitchell won that bout.He had a slippery defence complete with shoulder rolls.He was a great boxer who is often overlooked.

 

I have him ranked #313 all time.

Not by the HOF he's not. He's one of the most overrated, considering some of the talent excluded and his own inclusion.

 

Overrated?Far underrated.He lost ONE TIME in his entire career which he avenged.Deserves to be in the HOF EASILY.

 

I was never a big fan of him, though i think he could have potentially given Nelson a tough fight, because of Nelson's inconsistency at this point.

a good tidy technician that didmost things well , but with no real notable attributes imo.

 

He would have boxed Nelson's ears off.

He made Lopez look like a novice in the rematch.And he was slick at how he applied pressure on Mcdonnel without leaving himself exposed.

Mitchell was a fine fighter, but he should not of been allowed to box for the WBA title (though the 80s), that is ugly black eye to the sport.

But as said politics aside (which is a large reason why Mitchell does not get kudos) Mitchell was brilliant.

Not many fighters fight virtually every title fight in his opponents hometown, knowing a defeat would bring to the end not just your reign as champ but perhaps the end of your international career!

 

I don't think he was the most underrated, but he is very underrated IMO.

I understand why it is some people overlook him, as he didn't get the big fights he needed until late in his career (at which point he was probably a little past his peak). Still, when his moment in the sun finally came (against Lopez, another very underrated champion) he rose to the occasion and IMO he won both fights.

 

And Lopez himself is a very underrated champion as well. Just look at his resume going into that fight.

Afterward, he went on to upset an unbeaten Joey Gamache to win another title.

 

I don't think he's overrated, he's hardly ever talked about, but I think there are far better boxers than him still looking for a place at Canastota.

That he lost just once in his career sounds good, until you consider that the best fighter he beat was Tony Lopez, and even then he needed two fights to distinguish himself from him. I actually thought the decision in the first fight was right and don't buy the home crowd decision crap.

The most biased thing about that fight on the video I have are the two nongs in the commentary box who thought Mitchell won 9 rounds to 3.
