First off, I am a huge KP fan, he is my favorite fighter. He looked good against rubio, not great. Rubio didnt try to do much, I think he felt kelly's power early in the fight and didnt want to commit much on his punches. I will say though, the few times he did through combinations, pavlik really didnt look so sharp. I was expecting pavlik to ko rubio early, he had him hurt and vulenrable what seemed like the entire night, but i really dont think he was close to knocking him out cold. For his next fight, I would like to see AA, just like everyone else, but that wont happen till decemeber. I think John Duddy would be a good fight, but he really isnt a top contender yet. I wold like to see Felix strum fight pavlik and that would set up a killer fight with AA. Question is, if AA and KP do fight, where would it be held?
i almost think every time kelly had rubio out he would back off like he didnt want to ko him give the fans their moneys worth or like a sparring seesion. but i really didnt see to much improvement he still looks stiff. if i was the pavlik team i would veer away from aa rite away. duudy is next. Jack loew needs some new training teqniche he still saying stay behind the dbl jab.
I think it was good for a comeback fight, credit for not fighting a tune-up as a return. Since it was an easy TKO victory, let me share my concerns: in most rounds Rubio was too passive and moved backwards right into Kelly's jab's range, obviously losing every minute. But the first time he actually started moving forward, he instantly landed punches. Of those few occasions he pressed the action, he managed to land, even some clean rights to the chin. Kelly was also very inaccurate, threw many, but landed few very clean. It was quantity over quality, but of course enough to break Rubio down. Still, that 20% Compubox showed was a proof of what I saw. Rubio is no defensive master. But Kelly won all rounds maybe but one, got the stoppage, the confidence builder and the win for the fans. Time for bigger things.
I think Sturm would be a great test & "get ready for the big one" fight against AA. Kelly didn't look quite as sharp as I hoped, but he did loosen up as the fight went on & beat the **** outta Rubio to the point where he was grimacing from some punches. AA could take his head off. But if he doesn't, KP will beat another one into submission, pretty much as he always does.
Pavlik was not sharp in his bout Rubio I think needs some tune ups with Mora and Duddy before taking on Abraham or Sturm:bart
I think a solid "C" would be a proper grade for the performance. He got the mandatory out of the way....now's the time for bigger challenges.
I didn't see the fight, but I haven't heard anyone talking about how Pavlik had good lateral movement or how his footwork was off the chain.
Well that's never going to be his game really. He'll also move like a walrus on land. He also has very poor head movement too for the most part. I didn't see any marked improvement but then again, I don't think Pavlik was capable of that. I did see better posture and what not on defense. Also he actually remembered to bend his knees when he punches for once. He is what he is...and it's good enough to be a MW champ. The question IS is it good enough to be THE MW champ? We shall see.
Pavlik seemed to be working on a few things. Lead left hook. Double lead left hook. More body work. A couple of times he hit Rubio I couldn't believe Rubio wasn't finished. His team told us ahead of time it would be a 'technical' fight and he would box more. Let's face it. He was going to get **** from some regardess of what he did. That said. Rubio offered Pavlik a little chance to work on what Abraham will offer. He stayed behind the high guard a lot. Pavlik split the guard and punished the body. Again. We have to remember the way Kelly counts punches. He said Rubio hit him twice and he was never hurt. Remember, Kelly takes punches as part of his game plan that he doesn't consider meaningful.
He was pretty steady - Cut off the ring and more or less used his jab in doubles and triples to set up right hands. Pretty atypical Pavlik, not the sharpest one I've seen but no slouch.
I thought I saw him try a few more defencive moves here and there... But like somebody else said, he was still very stiff, straight-up and hittable... Every time Rubio tried to throw (which was not much) he seemed to land clean shots. He just didn't have the power to do any damage. Kelly always was over-rated... He needs a better trainer ASAP, but even then ??? Arum knows it... That's why he's going into protection/ducking mode. ie) Talking about Duddy, Mora, Forrest, Mundine etc. HaHaHaHa..........
I agree...but I just was a bit dissapointed that he didn't finish off/go for the kill the times it seemed he had Rubio hurt. Just in my opinion, he didn't close the show the way many expected him to. Plus i was frustrated that it seemed that Rubio wouldn't try to throw anything. Even his corner was going off on him in spanish. Anyways, im ready to see Pavlik vs AA!
The fight was mixed bag. I saw things I liked a lot, and I saw things I didn't like. All of you can believe me or flame me. I don't really give a ****. I know for a fact that when Leow kept telling Kelly to "stick to the plan" he was telling him "do not knock him out." All in all I'd give KP a C+ on performance.
