He, Jones, Ray Mercer, Briggs & Holyfield need to see counseling. Or they should all hang out together so they can have something to do.
well, it is a free country. duran fought at 50, why not tommy. its not like he is planning on fighting a top-level fighter..
Duran was just past his 50th birthday when he retired in 2001. I am not sure Hearns will get a title shot just because he wants one. He might have to fight some tuneups, which at his age would be difficult. Do you guys think he could beat Adamek?
Duran would still be fighting if not for the injuries he suffered in an auto accident in Argentina. Not saying it would be a good idea..but....
I remember Duran fighting a lot on USA network in those years. For a guy 50 years old he fought pretty well. He was beating guys 10 -15 years younger than him, although he was not beating anyone great. His last title fight at middleweight was when Joppy outclassed him. I was shocked to see Duran beaten up easily by Joppy in 1997. Not that he wouldn't be, but just to see Duran beaten by William Joppy -who was never near his class. even 5 years before Duran could have given Joppy a good fight. 10 years before he would have beaten him.
I remember that accident. Duran had several broken ribs which punctured his lungs. After that he could not really breathe properly to be in a fight. That is what I remember hearing him say in an interview.
Holmes beat Butterbean when he was like 52 I think (?). Hearns' brain is pretty much mush these days anyway, he can barely speak - I can't imagine getting hit is going to make him much worse.
The thing about fighting at 50 is that the rare times fighters do that is when they are heavyweights. It is very rare for a fighter to be 50 and fight below heavyweight, since the guyshave to make weight and be in shape. Holmes was 52 and Foreman was 47 when they last fought-But they were heavyweight. I am not sure how many other guys fought at 50 and above who fought below the heavyweight rank. Probably only Duran and now Hearns.
The Legend Killer :fight Calzaghe v Eubank ld Super Middleweight :fight Calzaghe v Hopkins ld Light Heavyweight :fight Calzaghe v Jones, Jr.ld Light Heavyweight :fight Calzaghe v Hearns ld Cruiserweight :fight Calzaghe v Ali ld Heavyweight :fight Calzaghe v Jack Johnson's Bones :skull Heavyweight Then cap it off with a farewell battle against the no. 1 pound-4-pound Manny Pacquaio :wooo at Super Middleweight. Legendary. Break Rocky Marciano's record and be the undisputed greatest EVER!! 50-0 50-0 50-0 arty Well, tied anyway .. some how I think those Johnson bones lying in the corner would not quite qualify as an opponent.
He is an ATG and can do whatever he wants but i really hope he reconsiders. I wonder what Emmanuel Steward thinks about this?
I don't think he can. When Roberto Duran was fighting it didn't seem like anyone would get him to stop fighting either. These guys really cannot stop. This is what made them famous and this is what gets them excited. But the boxing commissions should step in sometimes when a guy is 50. For thier own good. I know Emanual Steward feels the same way probably.
