Now if Robin Reid would have somehow beaten jeff lacy and unified the IBO/IBF supermiddleweight belts then he would have gone on to fight Joe Calzaghe. The two first fought originally after reid lost the WBC belt and challeneged Calzaghe for his WBO but lost via split decision having the english judge being the only one of the three to score the fight for reid and Calzaghe having to fight with a broken/swollen hand.
But after Calzaghe dominated the next big thing in american boxing who had just knocked out reid it makes me wonder what Calzaghe would have done to reid in a rematch at that time.
In the blue corner we got the Calzaghe haters
In the Red corner we got the Calzaghe fans

i think it was fair to say calzaghe was poor that night and reid was fighting better than ever, the fact that calzaghe still won shows you reid is a european level fighter at best.

if JC turns up he could even win by a KO

i still think JC would win relitivly easily, ried wasnt near his prime when he fought lacy, JC was about a year out of his. the scorecards at the end of the original fight was, 116 112, 116 112, 112 116 in favour of calzaghe, one judge was seriously off the pace compared to the other two.

ok maybe slightly above, but he wasnt 'world class', calzaghe is world class, hopkins is world class, kessler is world class.

the fact that he spent the early part of the fight holding on for dear life proves that, i can qoute from JCs book if you would like.

the only thing that reid did get over JC is he went to the olimpics in 1992 in JC place.

Reid was good and the one of four fighters along with Eubank, Kessler, Hopkins to give Calzaghe a really tough fight. But he just was a level below Calzaghe's ability to always find a way to win.

I was at newcastle arena the 1st time they met
Personally and the feeling from others in the arena was that Reid and edged it
Watching on tv the fight is very hard to call
Both fighters were world class at that time

I hated Robin Reid. I didn't like his attitude in the ring, always moaning about something or another, but that night he got robbed against Ottke I felt sorry for him. (Though in his next fight, against Brian Magee, he was worse than ever with his moaning). I don't think he was robbed against Calzaghe. It was a close fight that could be subjectivly scored close either way.

Was he World Class? I think we saw enough signs that Reid had the ability to be something special however his attitude stunk. He didn't leave a great or even excellent legacy so I think I would say he was World Class potential during his career but wasted talent.

Just because you named 4 fighters better than Reid does not mean he was not world class. Basically if you attain a top 10 ranking in the world you must be considered world class. I accept that the standard varies from generation to generation but I dont see how a fighter can win either a world title eliminator or genuine world title and not be considered world class.

On ESB people will use terms like elite to distinguish between good wolrd champions and exceptional fighters so maybe this is what you really meant.

Reid's workrate was lower than JC in that fight but he did land the best power punches that night. Sound familiar to another JC fight!
