Kessler - Calzaghe fought the number one supermiddle weight and took punches that have knocked fighters out in one go. Joe showed incredible handspeed, technique, footwork, a granite chin and a champs heart. that to me is what boxing is all about. However lacy was a beat down. Kessler fought toe to toe

has to be kessler simply because kessler deserves to be held in higher regard than lacy - and looking good against lesser opponents takes away in part from what happened in the fight of course.

Was going to go for Kessler as it was an awsome performance against his best opposition to date, But went with Lacy because he was pure class in that fight.

    Kessler by far.

Lacy was more pleasing on the eye, but the Kessler performance was more impressive.

    Hopkins, by distance for me.

Joe's control of range and footwork in that fight was breathtaking, especially considering the fact that the opposition was also expert in these areas.

I never saw balance (or lack thereof) provide such an advantage, also.

I've watched that fight a hundred times. I'll go to my grave never understanding this view!! I saw a younger man narrowly losing to an older more skilled opponent, because the older man no longer had the stamina to sustain his performance level. I won't try and drag you into an argument on the subject McGrain as I am fully aware that you have superb knowledge and objectivity and your opinion is anything but half-baked, I would never be so egotistical to think that I could change your mind or point out anything that you never seen, but I just don't see it at all. For me, Calzaghe managed to make it so close because he set a high pace and maintained it against a man with natural and understandable stamina issues. Joe's gifts of stamina, workrate, handspeed and resilience allowed this. His actual attacking work was inaccurate and ineffective, in terms of landing clean punches, which is what boxing is all about. JMHO :good

Hopkins of 2001 vs any version of Calzaghe = no stamina problem and thus comprehensive outclassing for Joe.

    Dinimita -

What did you make of Bernard's stamina against Pavlik?

Same as I made of it against Tarver and Wright, when the old master is not put under intense pressure and is allowed to fight at a pace that doesn't wear him out, he is on Easy Street.

When a younger, more energetic fighter with better stamina purposefully sets a high pace, like Calzaghe and Taylor, then a 40+ year old man struggles.

Bringing pressure to Hopkins is stupid. You'll get hurt. What Calzaghe did was bring brilliant pressure. He remained just out of range, he brought himself just into range to do his work than applied distance again. The combination forced Hopkins to take more steps than he wanted to, remain on guard when he wanted to.

The question should be - who else made him fight at a pace he didn't want to fight at, ever?

    The answer is, "nobody".

Calzaghe's unique balance meant that he didn't have to get set before launching attacks. Made it difficult, to say the least.
