Jacobs was probably more than a decent fighter. In his WBC challenge for the WW belt he had Whitaker down in the 11th, it looked like a bit of a flash knockdown as Whitaker was off balance but he went down nevertheless. IIRC Whitaker had Gary down twice in the 12th and Jacobs finished the fight looking up at the ceiling having been saved by the bell, great effort against an ATG.
If George was that good then surely he could have come again instead of retiring at 27? I remember watching Tony (and George, I saw most of his fights) but didn't see anything that special in either boxer TBH......
What happened in Jacob's fight with Patric Charpentier the Frenchman who ended up fighting De La Hoya? I think he was knocked out ... was the fight competitive?
I think Georgie lost interest in the sport when Jacobs did him, and if that was the case, retiring after Kirkland was sensible IMO. Tony look intresting, remember he was only 17 when he started, the Nunez fights were fun, but perhaps with hindsight showed his limits, Tony lacked the bang needed to reach the top.
Gary Jacob's fought the pound for pound champion pernell sweet pea whitaker went the distance with the then WBC Welterwight Champion in the Champions hometown. "He has my Respect".
I remeber Gary Jacobs he had a really flat spread nose - even for a boxer - he must of tasted a fair bit of leather on that he use to be on Sky TV alot on their excellent ringside programme he always came out with sound knowledge and sense - he was a good pundit
I dont know if any of my fellow scots remember this, but Gary Jacobs was a celeb security guard in a sport shop on Argyle st in Glasgow city centre back in his heyday, & me & my mates used to shop in it a lot! Anyway, cos I was teen, we never walked up & spoke to him, cos he used to walk about with a scowl Loads of people walked up to talk with him, but cos I was a rebellious teen, I didnt approach him, cos I was scared stiff that he would diss me! Looking back, theres no chance he would have, but being a teenager you never think straight. Big regret of my life that, not having the balls to talk to him, cos being an older man, I now realise that boxers love nothing more than their fans approaching them, pro boxers are always great to meet. Let that be a lesson to the younger boxing fans on brit ESB, boxers are much more approachable than football players, so if you ever encounter a boxer make sure you talk to him! Just as long as you dont hate them mind
I've since wathced about 12 of Gary's fights and he wasn't half bad!! The George Collins fight was immense and he didn't do too badly against McGirt either. He completely outboxed Wilf Gentzen for the Commonwealth and looked impressive against Proto to win the European title. Still looking for footage of the Whitaker fight, can anyone help?
Jacob's career passed me by a little at the time. I was too focused on my favourite fighters as a kid and paid little attention to the bigger boxing scene. My Dad speaks fondly of him. Having got into boxing more over the last 5 or so years though, looking back Jacobs was a very, very good British boxer. European level and cusp of world level without doubt. He must be able to dine out on the Sweet Pea stories every day of the week!
I remember the 'boy'lol:atsch)George Collins vs Jacobs fight. He was stopped by Gary Stretch as an amateur too,i think.
you couldn't be more right, all the former boxers i've met were gentlemen with mr buchanan being the best.no comparison between boxers and prima donna footballers(my own team included)
He hangs around with Paul Ferris now, hope he doesn't end up in the slammer, would be a shame to see him go the Michael Nunn route.
