Im finding it hard to choose between Joe Cortez and Eddie Cotton. Any thoughts? On the same subject, who's the best? Mills Lane anyone?
Lately, Joe Cortez has really fallen from grace. The Hatton-PBF clinching fiasco and then the Humberto Solo DQ... he's really become a shambolic referee.
Randy Neumann Close thread. Eddie Cotton wasn't even that bad last night. Sure, he could have stopped the fight on the first KD (Banks was clearly still in la-la land when he got up), but 15 years ago there wasn't a ref in the game that would have stopped the fight then.
Lawrence Cole is my vote for worst ref! Close second is Alfredo Garcia ref for the Danny Williams vs Konstantin Airich fight.
If Alfredo Garcia ever reffed more than that one fight, I think he'd be everyone's answer. I'm just not counting him since he was clearly out of his league there, and I don't believe he's reffed any other major fights. The reffing in Williams-Airich was an absolute travesty though. My understanding is that he's usually a judge and not a referee, and was a late substitute to ref the fight.
That's Frank Santore. Calling punches as butts, butts as punches, chatting during the count, not keeping the corners out of the ring, swatting flies while moving Kermit, collecting the scorecards then handing them back to the wrong judges, penalizing Martinez because Kermit insisted on blocking with the back of his head, etc., etc. The only mistake he didn't manage to make that night was leaving the ring for a bathroom break.
