I love Juan Diaz, one of my fav fighters, but he is craphouse at fighting with a cut. He loses all composure and becomes a totally different fighter ! A fighter who gets his butt whooped Who are some of the best and worst fighters in history at fighting with a significant cut ?
Most fighters do not fight better with cuts but Diaz did not handle that cut well at all, although that was a terrible stream of blood coming from the cut. Leonard did terrible with the cuts when he fought Duran in the rubber match, and that was when he was winning easily. Had Leonard been cut like that in his fights with Hagler or Hearns, he might have thrown in the towel mentally. Hagler is a guy who fought well with cuts-although he was rarely cut. He said when he sees blood he goes crazy, and with Hearns it did seem to make him swing for the fences more.
Perhaps the all-time classic example is Marciano maintaining his composure when Ezzard Charles split his nose in half. The Rock knew he had to finish him ASAP but didn't panic, and his calmness under pressure was rewarded when he did find the KO. Also Vitali didn't even seem to acknowledge that half of his face was hanging off his skull against Lewis. :hat
