Last night i watched jon thaxton lose his european title to a frenchman whos name escapes me. i was going to put this in the brit section btu wanted to know if i was the only one who had come across the following action thaxton had just hit 'the frenchman' with a well placed shot behind the ear, 'the frenchman' scuttled away before falling to the ground and landing on his arse, he got up clearly shaken and the ref checked he was alright, the ref was just starting the action again when thaxton cam charging in.... the frenchman still shaken blatently spat out his gumshield to bide himself an extra 15 seconds or so, thus avoiding a 1st round KO, he was given a one point deduction and survived the remaining 20 seconds of the round. the frenchman goes on to win the bout in a close and ugly affair.... should actions like this mean disqaulification or was the one point deduction right? or do you feel it depends on the circumstances?
i heard about the fight, thaxton said he was robbed in the first round i think but went on to say he accepted the loss and wants a rematch with the frenchman
i feel that thaxton deserves a rematch, i had the frenchman winning by 114 113 in the end, but i dont think it should have gone past the first round, he was gonna get KOd, thaxtons right hand was raised ready to finish him when he spat it out, disgraceful in my opinion
I think whoever spits out their gum shield to buy time and save themselves from a certain KO should not be allowed to get away with it. The referee should not interrupt the action; instead, he should let the guy take a full punch to the teeth without a gum shield. That would teach em.:deal
What I mean is that the ref should not interrupt the action at all. If the guy wants to fight without the gum shield to cheat the other guy of a certain win, fine...let him fight without the gum shield.
I wouldn't have disqualified Mezaache for spitting out the gumshield; its not as if he bit Thaxton's ear off. But like Dec said the referee should probably let Thaxton have a charge at him; then, if Thaxton can't get him out of there, the ref can wait for a break in the action to replace the piece. It will teach fighters to realise that if you spit the gumshield out then you can take the risk of having your teeth punched out.
