According to boxrec a Featherweight Walter Price did knock Johnson's old ass out in 7 rounds although Johnson was 60 years old in his last fight(besides WWII exhibitons). Price had just come off a 10 round decision loss to Canadian Featherweight/Bantam Weight Champion Leo 'Roy" Kid(?) in only his 3rd fight & never fought again after Johnson(3-1 career for Price). Maybe the great Jack Johnson ruined him in only his 4th fight? Or was embarassed about beating a 60 year old man? Saoul Mamby was the only officially sanctioned fighter to ever fight over 60 years old:shock: when he lost a ten round decision last year. He looks great for 61 (on youtube).
There is an article written by Price in an old BI magazine ,Johnson was around 60, Price about 38_40 I think .Price was a welter I beleive,he also fought Al MCoy the Middleweight Champ ,these fights were in back rooms of saloons. He beat Johnson ,but lost to McCoy
Slow 10 Rounds. MILLINOCKET, Me., Sept. 4.--Jack Johnson of Boston and Billy Dunning of Portland went 10 rounds to a draw here yesterday afternoon in a slow and tame exhibition.
My reference to Johnson was how many other heavyweight champions ... it's obvious other great black fighters had the same challanges and all have records of subpar performances against opponents they should have dominated except Jackson who simply never got a title shot
So Johnson ended his ring career after he was Ko'd by a featherweight? McVey must have hyperventilated when he read that.
Being a little anal here but, Louis had 25 title defences and 3 of his 25 defences were against black men: Walcott (x2) and John Henry Lewis.
"He handed me the only real beating I ever took ,I take my hat off to him, though ,I was outweighed" Sam Langford ,talking about the fight.
Not at all , I read this years ago and still have a copy of Boxing Illustrated with an article about it ,along with pictures of Price and details of the fight and his one against Al McCoy.I'll see if I can dig it out.You can tell everyone it was a "Pirme" Johnson at 60 years old. Price was not a Featherweight when he fought young Johnson by the way.
Do you also have the boxing magazine article where Jack Johnson himself said Hart was " the only man to whip him " in his prime " I can print the entire article here for you if you ask nicely.
