I really don't put much thought into fantasy fights, but I feel as though Chavez had the exceptional talent that overshadowed his era's lightweight contemporaries. A lot of people say Chavez build his record on fighting nobodys, yet after seeing the baby bull's performance last night, I would bet that Chavez stops Marquez around the 10th or 11th if not sooner. The same Marquez who is now considered the best lightweight, future hall of famer and posibly P4P the best fighter in the world. Diaz is a poor man's Chavez and nobody can dispute that. He is a good fighter but lacks the punching power, precise combinations, defense and most importantly the world class chin that Chavez possessed. It just puts into perspective how good Chavez was and in my opinion he is underrated.
Marquez would give JCC a hell of a night iMO .... his boxing , ring intelligence, durability , recovery and counter punching would make him a tough opponent for almost anyone at 135
JCC was a rare, rare talent. A top tier ATG. Almost anyone you put up against him is going to suffer in the comparison.
yep, and he also made a lot of great fighters look like domestic abuse victims. He was a monster. If you want to beat JCC at lightweight, you better go get Duran and I'm not too sure that's going to get the job done, even.
JCC was great but people need to stop thinking about yesteryear. Older fighters will never ever be beaten by todays fighters, ok we get it!
In your opinion, but see this is the reason this thread came to mind. I might be the minority but I see JCC demolishing Marquez. I love Marquez but there is no doubt that he had some trouble with Juan Diaz and as I stated before, Juan Diaz is nowhere near as talented as Chavez. In my view, if Marquez fought Chavez he would have been destroyed and then labeled as cab driver.
I see your point. What I mean is that some fighters are so good that they make their opposition seem weak, hence the cab driver quote that is oftened used to describe JCC's opponents.
That's not yesteryear you stupid *******... if you're not 16 yrs old it wasn't even all that long ago. Yesteryear is Stanley Ketchel and Bob Fitzimmons, nothing has changed in 15 or 20 years with the state of boxing and the human body except maybe steroids.
That came from Greg Haugen, in the promotion leading up to their fight and it was totally not true. Go look at Chavez' record, it's a laundry list of HOF fighters who were absolutely obliterated at their peak by JCC. Haugen himself was a decent champ and JCC just beat the living **** out of him like he was a sparring partner, like he was nothing. In front of the largest live crowd at a boxing match in history. He made Haugen take that statement back IN THE RING btw, immediately after the fight.
If you don't have that fight on DVD, you have GOT to get it. The electricity that was in the air that night still crackles right thru the screen.
JMM would give JCC a good run for his money. And Guzman's style would do the same, its just that his power would hurt him against JCC.
