It's easier to find an arrogant good boxer, than it is to find a humble good boxer. It's the fighters competitive personalitys.
Thats professional boxing, if crowds are bored or don't like a fighter then they will boo esp. at the bigger shows where a lot of people are just there for a night out rather than because they love boxing. Degales personna in the press doesn't help matters either, he comes across very poorly.
If you have the balls to get in the ring there should at least be respect while the fight is taking place. Regardless of what they have said beforehand. There should be an unwritten law to maintain some dignity from the crowd, unless the fighters are ripping you off with their performance. The only dude that was ripping people off was his opponent.
Thats all very nice in theory unfortuneatly this is the real world and he'd better shape up, improve his PR or else he better get used to the booing.
Frank Warren:"I know people buy their tickets, and I always say if you buy a ticket you're entitled to your opinion, but I think it was a little bit unkind of a small section of the crowd to do what they did. "I think it was not fair. This guy has just won a gold medal. "But he'll learn from it. He's a quality fighter and I'm convinced he is going to do the business."
They are just fools, far bigger than DeGale. DeGale has the bollocks to get in the ring, and these drunken fools boo him while he's doing it, and while he's trying to press the action. At least save that **** for post-fight or even entrance. This guy won a gold medal, while another lazy twat gets a free ride after he can't even make weight..and which guy gets booed? The one that was cocky in the press...****. Utter twats.
At that sort of show, if you come in dressed in gold, dancing your way to the ring you'd better entertain to crowd or you'll get ****. The booing was unfair given the circumstances but I find it really hard to feel sorry for the bloke....
Is it any worse than people on internet forums ripping boxers apart? Its a little more immediate but its the same principle.
Exactly, simply put it was unfair. The only guy that tried to give some entertainment was DeGale. The other guy took his cheque and ran.
Yes, completely different. There is a time and place to boo people and rip the **** out of em, or even air your views such as in a newspaper article or forum. When they are just doing their job after months of hard training they deserve 36 minutes respect, or 12 as it was.
Thats a very convienently placed line in the sand you've drawn there. I've seen plenty of world class boxers get called "bums" (and a lot worse!) on this site, thats just as bad as what happened to DeGale IMO. At least those boxers have proved themselves to be world class, if Degale wants to keep on with the brash, arrogant angle then he better back it up in the ring.
fact remains that if he wasn't such a gobshite he would not have been booed, ****s like that just don't do down well, especially a guy seen as an arrogant southerner. Way too cocky with **** all to back it up.
Calling people bums is just as cretinous. There is no line to be drawn between the people that booed and these same people that call good boxers bums, they are cut from the same cloth and would be happy to reverse roles. However, there is a clear distinction between booing a guy IN the ring when he's doing his job and then airing an opinion at the right time and place. But then again, these people are not really fans of boxing. They are fans of alcohol.
My main problem with the DeGale performance was that he put on a poor performance. Sure he was making his debut and the opponent came to survive...like alot of those sacrifical lamb boxers we see inported but DeGale just carried on like a cocky twat in the ring and never tried to impress or give the fans a display. I did not expect him to KO the guy but at least try and win the rounds by putting some effort in. Eubank is totally right about the kid.
easily the worst set of 'boxing fans' I experienced were the Hatton lot, knew zero about boxing as just a charmless shower of idiots to boot.
