True, I meant only two black fighters appeared in Louis title defenses. The John Henry fight was a favor from Joe Louis. Henry was ill and needed the money.

"It had been a dour struggle for twenty rounds, and Alex Greggains' decision in favour of the white man from Kentucky had cerainly not been welcomed by most of the spectators. For the first eight rounds at least Johnson, it was true had boxed with foxy cunning, but generally without aggression. There had been only one moment when he had come to life; and that had been in the sixth round ,when a couple of straight lefts had knocked Hart clear across the ring and allmost through the ropes.
But though he had had the better of the in- fighting that developed ,and though he had marked his man with bloodied eyebrows and crimson lips ,he could never put him down."[The 16 th and 17 th round description.]
"John Arthur Johnson was swept from neutral corner to neutral corner;moreover ,Hart's offensive did not blow itself out at the end of these two rounds. He continued to attack remorselessly till the end of the fight.Through half closed eyes he pin pointed his target; somehow he raised exhausted arms and conjured them into pistons to pump forth destruction. The last three round all belonged to Hart;Nevertheless it was a surprise when the referee decided that the fight belonged to him too."

Why do you allways assume that you have the definitive inside information on everything?

You started this thread so you could work in some more hate about Johnson ,as a couple of posters told you at the start of it, it's taken you awhile to get around to your real agenda but predictably you have.
Yo have zero interest in what may have been an exhibition between Johnson and Dunning ,except as a possible stick to beat the Black Champ with. Why do you persist in tearing down Johnson;s name at the expense of your own? You are a good poster ,but objectivity flies out the window when you post on Jeffries and Johnson.
Its become an obsession with you,one that I'm afraid does you more damage than Johnson, who must be smiling his gold toothed smile at your increasingly irrational efforts to traduce his name.
.I was right ! Johnson did make a pass at your Granny didnt he?

PS Notice that I included the parts that are favourable to Hart as well as Johnson?
    Thats called objectivity.

Dont forget to mention the many, many years after the Willard loss where he did not suffer a loss.

I always list the full report Mcvey, and more often than not provide a link. I must have posted at least 50 fight reports here. The point of this thread was to clarify an unknown.

I learned two things in this thread.

1). Jack Johnson was once again Lack luster in a draw vs Dunning.

2 ) He was Ko’d by a listed featherweight in his final ring appearance.

The obsession here is yours, not mine any time Johnson's names is brought up in a view that might be neutral, or less than flattering. It would be best to stay on point of the topic at hand, and then sling mud. Can you do that without making borderline racy comments with grandma’s, and gold teeth? That is all I ask.

Also, let's put to bed who won the Johnson vs Hart fight. The record books say Hart won, and Jack Johnson himself agrees:

Read on and take note Johnson says he was in his prime:

Do you think you have a find here? I first read this book 20 odd years ago,and have a copy in front of me as I type, it has a foreword by Gilbert Odd which was not in the original book.
Johnson said whatever people wanted to hear, this is the rest of it.
"One of the busiest years of my life was 1905. In all I had 13 contests
of considerable importance,in as much as they convinced the boxing authorities and boxers that I was factor that must be reckoned with in boxing history. In March ,in San Francisco I fought Marvin Hart, who later claimed the Heavyweight Championship ,on the retirement of Jeffries. This fight was not an auspicious one for me,as Hart got the decision, owing ,as Tad ,the famous sportswriter says,to the fact that in the excitement the referee pointed to the wrong man. However it was the only contest I lost,The other 12 events being in my favour, excepting 5 no decision matches .These allthough they are not officially recorded were won by me".Dont rely on faded clippings .GET THE BOOK FROM WHICH THEY CAME! AND DONT TRY AND TEACH ME TO SUCK EGGS.
    IM WAY AHEAD OF YOU!
If you are going to try and give dissertations on Jack Johnson ,you really should do some more reading on him,eg The books by Finis Farr, Denzil Batchelor,Guy Blake.and a must ,Papa Jack By Randy Roberts that had 5 years of research in it and was the basis for Unforgiveable Blackness .

ps Any comment on AJ Leibling's statement that Johnson dropped O Brien in the 1st round of their 6 round no dec fight? Or are you unaware of it?

    Want some more?
The Jim Johnson fight " Jack reverted to boxing and found a promoter ready to stage a 10round fight with another coloured heavy bearing the name Battling Jim Johnson". Jim tried hard enough to score, but Johnson picked off his punches with the greatest of ease, and jabbed and jolted whenever he felt inclined, which wasn't often." The fans got tired of the monotonous exchanges, especially after the Champion broke a small bone in his left arm in the third round, and did not use it thereafter, relying on his right toward off Jim's swings and occassionly draw him into an uppercut .At the finish one of the judges gave it to Jim,the other called it a draw ,a decision that
met with the approval of the referee. "

Excerpts from the Moran fight."Though sadly out of condition for a title fight the coloured man gave a perfect demonstration of his boxing skill, leading, feinting, spearing Frank's face with the left, crossing right and whipping in his superb uppercuts .Moran kept swinging his big right but in vain"
When in desperation Moran tried to put a dent in the Champions notable paunch ,he was just as thwarted as the clever Negro intercepted the majority of blows with his gloves and elbows. It was all so beautifully done that time and time again the fans showed their appreciation with bursts of applause. It was not a fight ,but an exhibition of superb ringcraft and at the finish the smiling Johnson's hand was raised , by the referee a verdict that met with the full approval of the crowd " . Dont take it too seriously M , its only a game

Sorry McVey, but love fests by authors do not trump film and primary newspaper reviews. I have had these conversations with top historians, who should not be confused with pet project authors, and they all say my points are valid.

History just does not bring up the dubious results of one John Arthur Jackson.

I posted Johnson's official words on the Hart fight, not some author who researched it 50 years after the fact. Just accept it here.

Be careful when you use Odd, the man thinks both Patterson and Burns were top ten all time heavies! Odd observations on boxing were... well Odd, and he really does a hatchet job on Dempsey in the Kings of the Ring.

Unforgivable blackness was a fine doc, but it has some errors in it too.

Films show Moran was a close fight. I thought Johnson edged it, but just barely, and we all know Moran was nothing special.

News reads indicate Jim Johnson, not Jack Johnson should have won their title fight.

News reads also think O'Brien, who was 163 pounds pretty much, drew with a prime Jack Johnson, or even was a shade better.

The truth is Burns was ill and at a low weight, when he lost the title. It is true, Burns asked for the fight to be delayed weeks but the promoter said you either fight now, or are not paid.

You have read most of the books. My question is why don’t these authors bring up these facts? Like I said the history of boxing is good enough. To fabricate or omit does not make a book better. In my opinion, it makes it worse.

It's as if Johnson was the only fighter who had to live hand to mouth as a pugilist in the early 20th century, who might have gotten the bad end of local decisions, or had to go for a dozen shoot fights in a year in order to get some bread, or who drank too much before a fight... Please, the history of boxing in this era, and the eras beyond, is rife with these realities. Somehow, for Johnson, they add to his already inflated legacy rather than are seen as a common condition of fighters of his generation. As I said before, he has the greatest PR of any past champion. It has become sacrilege to even suspect he might have been deficient in any matter of pugilism

And lest I be confused with a career detractor of Johnson, I have been a fan of his since my TEENS. I have great respect for his audacity and pure balls in the age he faced. Name me a fighter with bigger cajones than this man possessed.

That said, he was merely an upper echelon competitive heavy for his era, not some spectacular, once in a generation fighter. Langford was the true great of that era. A trained Willard would have had a very good chance of beating him at any stage of his career.

My take on Johnson--Reading this seems to be a case of focusing on the glass being 1/10 empty rather than 9/10 full. After his losses to Choynski and Griffin in 1901, Johnson went 25 years losing decisively only to Willard in a finish fight in which he was far ahead after the normal 20 or even 25 rounds. The loss to Hart may not have been robbery, but at least as many thought Johnson won as not. The Jeannette fight was a 2nd round DQ for which I don't know the details.

What other fighter in any division can match that record of never really being outclassed over such a long period? Or at worst, being outclassed only by Willard, if you want to consider that being outclassed.

And remember, Johnson was colored champion or world champion from 1903 to 1915, an extraordinary 12 years. Even if you argue that the last couple of years he was ducking top contenders, he was still a worthy champion for about a full decade.

Johnson might not have decisively defeated several opponents in the style that later champions in very different eras did, but he also didn't suffer really crushing defeats after 1901, until he was literally on the verge of old age.

    Lately,
I'm not impressed with Odd, if truth be told Roberts on the other hand is excellent,I recommend his book.
I doubt Burns had yellow "fervor", or even fever, just as I doubt Mcintosh would force him to go through with the fight if he had Jaundice.Jaundice is an extremely debilitating condition, which I can testify to ,plus Mcintosh and Burns were extremely close friends. Not so" Huge Deal" [as Hugh D Mcintosh was known], and Johnson, indeed Mcintosh thoroughly disliked Johnson , and carried a piece of pipe wrapped in newspaper when he negotitiated with Jack" just in case that Black ******* tries anything".
KIngs of the Ring has some srrange ratings but evryone has their own way of looking at things.Hart may have deserved the dec against Johnson I dont know ,and neither do you.The O Brien no dec was a farce a cynical out of shape Champion ,and a timid opponent ,the crowd showed what they thought of it by booing lustily.
