Is beating Juan Diaz reason enough for a boxer to be crowned P4P #1?

Marquez has done a lot more than just beat Diaz.

Styles makes fights. Even with his wins over Casa and Baby Bull they were close fight until the stoppage. While Pac simply dominates his opponents.

Just because you have difficulties with a certain fighter doesn't make him the better fighter. Specially if those fights were razor thin, whoever the winner is. Case point....JMM struggled with Barrera, PAC dominated him both times. JMM gave more rounds to Jandaeng, Jaca, MAB, Juarez, Casa and Babybull that PAC did to Larios, Morales, Solis, MAB, Diaz and Hoya.

Then of cors there's the resume. PAC has definitive edge than Marquez in this criteria. I 2t ur a boxing enthusiast divac. This should have been elementary to you.

By itself of course not. But add to that stopping Casamayor and beating the so called P4P#1 in his last 3 fights then of course it is.

i dont understand the logic people are using. pac moves three wights to fight delahoya (no one knew the affect of his weight drain) as an underdog and call it hype overated. marquez beats diaz who he was supposed to defeat and then he is p4p number 1. these fans are loony

I understand what you're saying about styles......
....the difference between us I would say is that I dont believe JMM struggled with either MAB or Casa....
Juan Diaz gave Marquez a better fight then either of those, and I was just discussing with a fellow Pac fan poster on a different thread, about the ring size making a difference in both Marquez' and Chris John's performance this past saturday night.

The ring size was so small to benefit the styles of both Diaz and Juarez who were fighting at home, yet you saw how JMM was able to adjust to the situation at hand and do what he had to do to win inspite of ring conditions not suiting his boxing style and ability to move at wider angles in that small ring......

I take all of this into account my friend......JMM fighting Diaz in a small ring like he did, would be equivalent to a task like Pac fighting Joan Guzman (a runner) in Guzman's backyard and in as big a size ring allowable to suit Guzman's running style and make it harder on Pac to cut the ring off!

.....but off course, some fighters just get preferential treatment that others dont!

Believe me, when I rate P4P, I dont base it on head to head.....my criteria for that is the ability of the fighter to deal with all different kinds of styles, and imo JMM is more adaptable to deal with the different styles that fighters may posses.

.....before this fight with Diaz, alot of people in this forum who were picking Diaz, were pointing to style issues.....they believed that Diaz' swarming pressure and highworkrate would be JMM's kryptonite as old as JMM is.....they said Diaz would'nt allow JMM the room to box and counter....
turns out he passed that test like a P4P'er!

Marquez countered Diaz unmercifully at close range, and in as small a ring as it was......as the rounds passed he found just a little more room little by little, until Marquez got the range in his favor and put a halt to matters......
    Thats what a P4P'er does!

no. everyone is on the bandwagon right now because the fight was exciting and still fresh. but when the dust settles these fanatics need to realize that marquez needs to beat pac or a top 10 p4p fighter like cotto, mosely, floyd to be considered as the p4p champ.

marquez was getting beaten up untill the 8th round when diaz got a cut. that performance was not good enough to make him number 1.

What JMM did on Saturday night is nothing short of amazing. I actually picked the Baby Bull to win the fight either by UD or late round stoppage.

Juan Diaz has been so successful due to a style that is very hard to compete with.
    1) Punch volume - he throws between 85-105 punches per round throughout the entire fight.
    2) Effective Aggression - Even if you match his punch output for several rounds, he still has the ability to win the rounds due to effective aggression and dictating the pace of the fight.
    3) Good Defense- He has a proven chin and a proven defense.
    4) Stamina - He is still very young and has the ability to keep up a very busy workrate.

With all of these variables, factored in with JMM's age, I thought the Baby Bull was a lock to win this fight.

Boy, was I wrong. JMM put on a clinic!! That is, by far, his most impressive performance. He dominated and KO'd a younger, fresher opponent in his prime.

After this performance, he deserves everyones' pound for pound #1 recognition.

Difference is Nate was nowhere on the P4P scale when he beat Diaz. That did propel him probably into the 20's at the time though.

Marquez was probably slightly behind Pac, on the basis that he beat Pac in the 2nd fight aswell. Therefore Pacquiao beating paper-champion David Diaz and walking corpse Oscar De La Hoya, isn't enough in my opinion to prevent JMM taking over having stopped the lineal champion and #1 contender.
